ZIMMER -- Sarah "Sally" Olert Zimmer. Died on April 5, 2010. Sally (Sarah Kay Olert) was born May 25, 1939, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father, Dr. Frederick Olert, was a prominent Presbyterian minister and her mother, Sarah, was a pillar of the church. They were devoted to each other, their family, and their faith. Sally had a happy upbringing along with her four smart and lively siblings. She attended Wooster College, in Wooster, Ohio, and during a summer vacation at beautiful Walloon Lake, Michigan, she met her husband-to-be, John Wenzel Zimmer. Like Sally's, John's family spent every summer at the lake, and the couple's first date was by boat, a vintage Chris-Craft. After marrying in 1960, Sally and John spent summers together at Walloon, a tradition their children and grandchildren are continuing. John graduated from both Duke University and the University of Michigan, and had a long career in the publishing and printing business. Sally and John raised two children, first in Lake Bluff and Lake Forest, Illinois, then in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over the years, Sally put her heart into an array of causes, including the Presbyterian Church, the League of Women Voters and a variety of community and civic jobs. She worked at the Ferry Hall School and Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest. She was also an administrator at Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a position she held for fifteen years before retiring in 2007 and moving back to Lake Forest, a place where she had close friends and a long history. As well as being hard-working, family focused, and devoted to her faith, Sally modeled professionally, was an excellent golfer and bridge player, and was a gracious and fun-loving hostess and friend. Sally was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband. She is survived by son David Christian, wife Jane; and granddaughters, Lucile Jane and Gabrielle Christine of Wauconda, Illinois; daughter Sarah Lucile and husband Jim Sleeper of Solana Beach, California; sister Mary Boyd and husband Joseph of Nashville, Tennessee; sister Grace Dailey of Marietta, Georgia; brother Frederick Olert and wife Carol of Grand Rapids, Michigan; sister Susan Dowell of Pensacola, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 5:00 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, Illinois. Cancer took both Sally and John much too soon. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in Sally's name to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org or 800-227-2345.
