WALLIS -- Stafford R. Wallis II On March 4, 2010, Stafford Roosevelt Wallis II passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 67. Born in New Orleans, LA on February 11, 1943, "S.R." was a pillar of the Albuquerque City and Bernalillo County, NM, communities he so dearly loved. After serving in the Vietnam War, S.R. entered law enforcement with the New Mexico State Police in 1972 as a patrolman and later as a member of the Governor's security detail for former New Mexico Governor Raymond S. "Jerry" Apodaca. He then went on to work in warrants and extraditions for the Bernalillo County Sherriff's Department, where after 30 years he concluded his law enforcement career as the County's first retired African-American Deputy Sherriff. He is survived by two daughters, Arlene R. Wallis of Middle River, MD, and Stephannie D. Williams of Virginia Beach, VA; one son Patrick Wallis of Perry Hall, MD; his former spouse, Lt. Colonel (Retired) Bertha N. Williams of Perry Hall, MD; four grandchildren Anton Jones of Albuquerque, NM, Alexandra Jones and Julian Wallis of Middle River, MD, and Daniel Wallis of Bumpass, VA. He is survived by seven brothers Lionel Wallis of Baton Rouge, LA, Kenneth Wallis of Houston, TX, Benjamin Jr., Donald, Melvin, Harrison "Eddie" and Tony Wallis, all of Houma, LA; four sisters, Diane W. Coleman, Linda W. Butler and Gaynell M. Wallis, all of Houma, LA, and Wanda W. Bowie of Colfax, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Joseph Wallis and Dorothy McGuire Wallis; and one sister Claudia Wallis. Memorial service(s) will be announced at a later date.
