CASSIERO -- Daniel Cassiero died on October 31, 2009. A native New Yorker, Dan moved to Albuquerque with his partner, Craig Stoebling, in July, 2004 and has resided there ever since. A priest of the Archdiocese of New York, Dan was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1968 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York City, by Terence Cardinal Cooke, the then Archbishop of New York. He has served in a variety of ministries where he was known for his humor and the quality of his preaching. Father Dan was born in New York City, reared in the Bronx and New Rochelle, New York, and then took up residence in Staten Island, where he served in his first parish. In 1970 he was assigned to Msgr. Farrell High School. In 1979 he was given permission to serve as a chaplain in the United States Air force, which he did at Little Rock AFB and Kirkland AFB, NM. He returned to New York briefly to serve as Master of Ceremonies at St. Patrick's Cathedral. In 1986 he returned to the Air Force as the Chaplain at Plattsburgh AFB, NY, where he served until being medically retired in 1988. With permission from Cardinal John O'Connor, Father Dan taught in the Fairfax, VA public schools until returning to Staten Island on the faculty of Moore Catholic High School. While teaching he returned to school so that he could earn his Masters of Social Work Degree from Fordham University in 1995. He was then hired by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Manhattan, where he worked as a clinical social worker with homeless and addicted veterans until 2004 when he retired from the VA. In that year he relocated to Albuquerque, NM where he lived with his partner Craig until the time of his death. Father Dan's ministry in the parish on weekends and in the workplace during the week was an effective ministry. With gratitude to God and to those who were a blessed part of his life, Father Dan has now gone ahead to wait for those whom he loves. May he rest in peace, and may Craig especially find happiness and peace.
