DAILEY -- Philip H. Dailey passed away peacefully at the home of his son, David, and family, in Grove City, Pennsylvania where he had very recently moved. He was born in Mill Creek, PA, January 8, 1921 to Harry P. Dailey and Nannie E. (Hess) Dailey, the first of three children. He grew up in Millerstown, PA, where he met Charlotte Phillips (Dailey) to whom he was married for nearly 57 years. She preceded him in death. They spent their early married years in Los Alamos, NM before moving to Albuquerque. Mr. Dailey was a WWII veteran who served in the army as a member of the Special Engineering Detachment with the Manhattan Project. He helped with the design, final assembly, logistics and measurement of the first nuclear test at Trinity site near Alamogordo, NM and is pictured in the National Atomic Museum on the platform prior to the test along with R. Oppenheimer, General L.R. Groves, A.D. Van Vessem and others. He retired from Sandia Laboratories in 1983 after 37 years of service during which time he supervised the logistical and administrative support to both atmospheric and underground nuclear tests. Following retirement, he and Charlotte traveled extensively across the US and made many new friends, but always kept a good number of close friends in Albuquerque. He helped to organize the reunions for participants in the Manhattan Project for many years, and was one of the original members of the Los Alamos Historical Society. He was a kind, gentle, thoughtful person whom friends and family consulted frequently for his wit and wisdom. He was an avid reader, a wood-working hobbyist and a devoted family man. He had been an elder and deacon in the Presbyterian Church since the 1950s. He was preceded in death by his sister Ruth Thomas; and grandson, Philip Luke Hammar; and is survived by a sister, Joyce Martz of Altoona, PA; daughter, Donna Hammar of Portland, OR; son, David Dailey and wife, Caron Carnahan of Grove City, PA; seven grandchildren: Hans Hammar, Ned Hammar, Carla Hammar, Krystal Strickland, Julia Dailey, Trevor Dailey, and Brianna Dailey; former son-in-law Mike Hammar of Halfway, OR; several nieces and nephews, two great-grandchildren, and by dear friends Denis Norlander and Dana McCausland of Albuquerque, and Betty Risser of Canandagua, NY. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009, 11:00 a.m., at the Sandia Presbyterian Church, 10704 Paseo del Norte NE, Albuquerque, with the Reverend Dewey Johnson presiding. Interment will be at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to: l'Hopital Albert Schweitzer, the Central Asia Institute, or the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).
