JOHNSTON -- Captain Joseph Francis Johnston DC, 79, a chiropractic physician and a resident of Albuquerque for over 28 years, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gysele in 2007. Of his wife, Joe often said, "Gysou was the greatest gift of my entire life." Dr. Johnston is survived by his sister, Mrs. Sharon Frances Kalinski and husband, Peter, of Richmond, VA; aunts, Mrs. Edna Zeltner of Greenwich, CT and Mrs. Marie Morrissey of Jensen Beach, FL; cousins, Mr. John F. Johnston, Jr. of Rye, NY, Rev. Fr. Donald Johnston of Harrison, NY, Hon. Judge William Johnston of Harrison, NY, Mrs. Noelle Brosch of Booth Bay, ME, Mrs. Pat Sager of New Bern, NC, and Mr. Robert Light of CT. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Mme. Nicole Malek and nieces and nephews who all reside in Paris, France. Dr. Johnston was born on April 2, 1930 in Port Chester, NY to William and Agnes Mantella Johnston. He was a sailor, Merchant Marine Ship's Master, Panama Canal Pilot, U.S. Naval Reserve Officer, marine industry executive, marine petroleum transportation educator, author, chiropractic physician, occupational health consultant, independent medical examiner, Moncrief Army Community Hospital chief of clinic, and the devoted husband to his wife, Gysele for over 51 years. For the ten years prior to Gysele's passing in February, 2007, Joe was her full time care-giver and health-care advisor. During that time he developed a practice concept by which optimal health and longevity are promoted by reducing health risk factors and addressing the causes of preventable death. His proactive care of well patients and adjuvant collaboration with integrative medicine have been very successful promoting anti-aging, longevity, and monetary benefits for families and the national health economy. Joe graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in 1951 and from the Southern California University of Health Sciences magna cum laude in 1981. He was a long time member of the New Mexichords barbershop chorus and quartets, American Merchant Marine Veterans Assn., NM Chiropractic Assn. and a perpetual member of the USMMA Alumni Association. A Latin Requiem Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel, 1420 San Pedro NE, Wednesday, May 27, 2009, 6:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Risen Savior Catholic Community, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Thursday, May 28, 2009, 11:30 a.m. Entombment with full military honors by U.S. Merchant Marine Honor Guard will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery; and, the New Mexichords will honor him in song.
