ABEYTA -- AURORA LUCIA ABEYTA MAY 30, 1925 - MAY 18, 2009 Aurora was born in Tucumcari, New Mexico. She worked for the State of New Mexico for almost 50 years...public service for which she received many awards. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society (Las Carmelitas). Although she was never married nor had children, she was a maternal spirit and treated us all as her kids. Rora loved to joke and tease. She was fond of the gastronomic arts and enjoyed the occasional glass of wine. She made great fudge and decent bourbon balls. "Rora introduced many of us to fine dining and fine snacking. She touched many people in her life and we are moved by her passing. Although she was confined to bed in her last years, she maintained her courage and her dignity. On behalf of Aurora we would like to thank the kind staff of Casa Real Care Center and the nice people from Odyssey Hospice. Aurora is survived by her sister, Anita Roche of Albuquerque; her brother, Louis of Tucumcari; her sister Lorinda Kemp of Albuquerque; her brother, J.A. "Red" of Carlsbad; her brother Norman R. of Tucumcari; her sister, Christine Turnbeaugh of Tucson; her brother, Steve F. of Tucson; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends, too numerous to mention. BRIGGS -- Emily Briggs, age 81, died May 20, 2009, in Albuquerque. She was born Emily Botts on June 8, 1927, in Clark Co., Kentucky, to Elmer Handsfort "Jack" and Ella Rhea Golden Botts. She was the widow of Jesse A. Briggs. Emily graduated from Mt. Sterling High School, then received a BA in English from Anderson College (now University) in Anderson, Indiana, and her M.A. from New Mexico State University. She was an elementary school teacher, first in Anthony, NM, then Orange County, CA, and she retired from the Albuquerque Public School system in 1992 after 24 years. She taught mostly the third and fourth grades at Alamosa and Collet Park Elementary Schools. Emily was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Robert Botts and William Botts. She is survived by her sister Catherine Christopher and husband Ernest of Winchester, KY, her brother Benny Botts and wife Edna of Richmond, KY; sister-in-law Betty Botts of Holt, MO; two daughters from her marriage to Joseph D. Blanchard: Jolie Blanchard Brown and husband John of Arlington, VA, and Roberta Busich of Albuquerque; her two granddaughters Andrea Busich and Reanna Alford; and a great-granddaughter Alyson Alford. Emily was a supporter of education and the arts. She had the curiosity of a perpetual learner and educator. For many years until her death, she was an active member of Daughters of the Nile, where she served as Queen in 1999. She volunteered with the Albuquerque Natural History Museum and the Public Library, and supported the symphony and light opera. Her interests included science, natural history, art history, anthropology, pre-Columbian cultures, Egyptology, archeology and genealogy. She was an avid reader. CAMPBELL -- William N. Campbell, age 78 of Albuquerque, NM a resident since 1951 passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009 at a local hospital, Bill was born on June 22, 1930 in East St. Louis, IL, to William N. Sr. and Berniece E. Campbell. He married Ruth Rose Campbell on April 25, 1950 in O'Fallon, IL. She preceeded him in death after 52 years of marriage on January 18, 2003. Mr. Campbell was a Realtor for 51 years in Albuquerque, and was a member of the Albuquerque Board of Realtors. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving at Kirkland Air Force Base as Staff Sgt. with the Military Police Division. He was a current member of Sandia Presbyterian Church. Bill had a wide circle of friends and enjoyed playing golf. Surviving are his wife Donna whom he married on November 23, 2007 in Dana Point, CA, his three sons, Bill Campbell III and his wife Alyson of Albuquerque, NM, Gaylord T. Campbell and his wife Roxanne of Albuquerque and Kevin E. Campbell and his wife Debora of Dana Point, CA. Grandchildren, Bryan Grandin of Los Lunas, Juliette R. Campbell and Tanner S. CONWELL -- Kenneth L. Conwell, 81, a resident of Albuquerque since 1939, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the VA Hospital. He is survived by his son, Kenneth L. Conwell II; his daughter, Pamela Whitfield and her husband, Daryl; one grandson, Shawn Michael Whitfield; and several nieces and nephews, all of Albuquerque. Kenneth was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Kathleen E. Conwell on March 17, 2009. He was born on June 3, 1927 in Wheeler, TX to James and Edna Davis Conwell and grew up there until the age of 12 when he and his family moved to Albuquerque. Kenneth was a graduate of Albuquerque High School. After high school he entered the U.S. Navy during WW II and served for 1 year till the war ended. Kenneth married Kathleen Mann on September 12, 1947 in Albuquerque. He was a Mason and a Shriner and was President and CEO of K.L. Conwell Corp. for over 50 years. Kenneth was a loving father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. COPPINGER -- Marguerite Wadsworth Coppinger, 88, a resident of New Mexico for over 50 years, passed away at home with her family Wednesday, May 20, 2009. She is survived by her son Wadsworth Coppinger and wife Elizabeth of Edgewood; daughters Carol Coppinger and Gail Coppinger-Martinez, both of Albuquerque; and grandchildren Benjamin Coppinger, Isabel Coppinger, Daniel Coppinger, Abelina Coppinger, and Caleb Coppinger. Mrs. Coppinger was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Coppinger and son Brian Coppinger. Marguerite received her Bachelors in Education at the University of Albuquerque. She taught for 14 years at Los Lunas Public Schools. Mrs. Coppinger also had a Bachelors degree in Music from Northwestern University and played piano throughout her life. CRAWLEY -- Florence Madeline Crawley went to be with the Lord on Saturday May 9, 2009. Florence Casaccia was born in Glen Lyon, PA, a small coal mining town near Scranton, PA, the last of eight children. She graduated from King County Nurses College in 1938 and joined the Navy, serving as an officer during WWII where she met and married Thomas V. Crawley, Jr. of Lamesa, TX. Thomas and Florence moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1951 where they lived for more than 50 years and raised three boys, Thomas IV, Joseph Michael and Jerald M. Florence worked as a registered nurse for Albuquerque Surgical Group for 30 years before retiring in 1992. She and Tom celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary shortly before Tom died in 1999. She relocated to Flagstaff, AZ in 2005 to live near her son Jerald. She is survived by Jerald M. and his wife, Leslie, three grandchildren, Thomas V., Sharon, and Diane and three great-grandchildren. The family is planning a celebration of her life in Albuquerque in the near future. CRISPIN -- Joe Evaristo Crispin passed away on Tuesday morning, May 19, 2009, after a long battle with cancer. Joe was born in Las Vegas, NM on January 4, 1921, the only son of Rafael and Margarita Crispin. He grew up in Mosquero, NM, graduating from Mosquero High School in 1940. Joe was a veteran of World War II, serving 3 years and 3 months in the U.S. Army Air Force, and is a Life member of the American Legion Post 99. After returning from the service he worked for the New Mexico Highway Department as a road surveyor. He later attended New Mexico Highlands University, earning Bachelors and Master of Science degrees in Biology. He did additional graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley, Colorado College, the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and the University of New Mexico. Joe had a distinguished 32 year career as an educator beginning at Penasco High School, where he served as science teacher and assistant principal. He later transferred to Espanola High School, serving as Chairman of the Science Department. He was also an adjunct professor for New Mexico Highlands University for teacher accreditation courses. Joe was a life member of the National Education Association. After retirement, Joe became a member of the Board of Directors for the Senior Citizens program in Santa Fe, until he and his wife moved to Albuquerque. Twice he was conferred the honor of Colonel-aide-de-Camp by the Governor of New Mexico, and received other awards for volunteerism from The City Different Retired Educators and the Senior Citizens organization. Joe loved music and played the saxophone, guitar, violin, piano, banjo, and bandolin. The guitar was his favorite and he was especially proud of a custom classical guitar made for him by Pimentel & Sons. Joe Evaristo Crispin is survived by his wife, Celine; his son, Joe Crispin (Tina) of Lake Elizabeth, CA, and his daughters, Jeneane Schneider (Cal) of St. Charles, MO., and Kathryn Clark (Dean) of Albuquerque; twelve grandchildren, Joey Crispin (Chrissy), Mauree Hamilton (Brownie), Rohn Engh, Michelle Wallace (Dave), and Tracy Claflin (Jim) and their mother, Anna Marie Crispin; Vanessa Peralta (Chris) and her mother, Margie Engs; Tony Crispin, Kimberly Schneider, Kyle Schneider, Joy Bouton (Kim), Brendan Clark, and Kevin Clark; sixteen great-grandchildren, Jack, Haley, Ronin, Aubrianna, Kade, Mikailin, Devon, Marcus, Emilio, Lily, Amanda, Justin, Lindsey, Sayra, Jami, and Loren; his niece and nephew, Patty Alfred and Pat Martinez of Llano, CA; cousin Patricia Moon of Albuquerque; and many other friends and family. DANIELS -- Elizabeth Ann Daniels, 74, long time resident of New Mexico, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at her home. She is survived by her loving and supportive husband, of 45 years, Bill; her son Bill T. Daniels; her daughter, Teri Daniels; four grandchildren, William Daniels, Myla Daniels, Jason Carlson and Jerry Carlson; sister-in-law Miriam McDaniel; nephews, T.R. McDaniel, Jr., David McDaniel and Robert Sanders; nieces, Linda Rundell, Nancy Williams and Catherine Lehmann and a great-niece Leslie Lehmann. Ann was preceded in death by her father R.L. EVANS -- Leonard G. Evans, 88, affectionately known as "Paw" to his family and many, many friends, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 14, 2009, surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Elizabeth; his brother Lewis and wife Bernice, and his sister Ida Oberschulte; his children Charles and wife Sharon, Kurt and wife Patricia, daughter Laurie Balmer and husband Dean; his grandchildren Andrew and wife Mollie, Kate, Lindsay, Jessica, Meredith, Madeline, and Ethan and many nephews and nieces, including Michael and Sandi Jerome of Albuquerque. Paw was born in Buffalo, New York on June 6, 1920 to George and Helen Evans. Like so many of his generation, he struggled through the Great Depression with perseverance and an enduring will to succeed. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at a young age and soon after began his life-long career as a highly-skilled sheet metal worker. In the U.S. Navy during WW II, he served on the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard with bravery and dedication, traits he would display continually during his life. A hard-working, loyal union man, he was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association for more than 65 years and a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers' Local Union 49 since 1958, when he and his family moved to Albuquerque from Detroit, Michigan. Paw was a skilled woodworker and cook, famous among family and friends for his apple pies and green chile stew. Patient and accepting of others, He was a generous, stable, caring presence for the many friends and neighbors who counted themselves as part of his family and thought of him as their "Paw". He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Paw's memory will be cherished by those of us who want to live our lives as he lived his. Cremation has taken place.

GREWIS -- Lauretta M. Grewis, 90, resident of Albuquerque, passed from this life to be with the Lord, on Friday, May 22, 2009. She was born on January 29, 1919, in Lilbourn, MO, the daughter of Jacob and Lydia Janssen. Lauretta was preceded in death by her husband Eugene A. Grewis in 1982. She is survived by her son Eugene G. Grewis; her brother Jacob Janssen and his wife Helen; her sister Mildred Janssen and numerous nieces and nephews. Lauretta had a love for gardening, photography and travel, but her greatest love was taking care of her family and her home. She spent most of her life in the St. Louis area and moved to Albuquerque, NM in 2003. HEGGEM -- Gordon Heggem, 83, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. Memorial Service was held May 18, 2009, Founders Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 422 S Church St, Grapevine, TX. Mr. Heggem was a Certified Public Accountant, having worked in Public Accounting in Albuquerque and El Paso, then with KPMG Peat Marwick as the Managing Partner in El Paso. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Grapevine and a former member and President, and Secretary of Western Hills United Methodist Church in El Paso. Gordon was an active member and served in many offices of the El Paso Rotary Club, and received the Paul Harris Fellow award. Twice he was awarded the highest volunteer honor in Girl Scouts, "The Thanks Badge". JOHNSTON -- Captain Joseph Francis Johnston DC, 79, a chiropractic physician and a resident of Albuquerque for over 28 years, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gysele in 2007. Of his wife, Joe often said, "Gysou was the greatest gift of my entire life." Dr. Johnston is survived by his sister, Mrs. Sharon Frances Kalinski and husband, Peter, of Richmond, VA; aunts, Mrs. Edna Zeltner of Greenwich, CT and Mrs. Marie Morrissey of Jensen Beach, FL; cousins, Mr. John F. Nicole Malek and nieces and nephews who all reside in Paris, France. Dr. Johnston was born on April 2, 1930 in Port Chester, NY to William and Agnes Mantella Johnston. He was a sailor, Merchant Marine Ship's Master, Panama Canal Pilot, U.S. Naval Reserve Officer, marine industry executive, marine petroleum transportation educator, author, chiropractic physician, occupational health consultant, independent medical examiner, Moncrief Army Community Hospital chief of clinic, and the devoted husband to his wife, Gysele for over 51 years. For the ten years prior to Gysele's passing in February, 2007, Joe was her full time care-giver and health-care advisor. During that time he developed a practice concept by which optimal health and longevity are promoted by reducing health risk factors and addressing the causes of preventable death. His proactive care of well patients and adjuvant collaboration with integrative medicine have been very successful promoting anti-aging, longevity, and monetary benefits for families and the national health economy. Joe graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in 1951 and from the Southern California University of Health Sciences magna cum laude in 1981. He was a long time member of the New Mexichords barbershop chorus and quartets, American Merchant Marine Veterans Assn., NM Chiropractic Assn. and a perpetual member of the USMMA Alumni Association. KEARNEY -- John Francis. In Loving Memory of John Francis Kearney, 92, who died on March 30, 2009; four months after losing his beloved wife of 56 years, Margaret Ellen Bixby Kearney. He was very proud of and devoted to his family and kept involved in the lives of his three children, John Joseph (JJ) Kearney and his wife Kim, of Florida; daughters, Patricia Ellen Swanson and her husband, Richard of Sandia Park; and Grace Ann Kearney of the home. He is also survived by the pride, joy and love of his life, his only grandson, John Christopher Kearney and his wife, Lindsey, also of Florida. He was born October 18, 1916, in Weehawken, New Jersey. Kearney obtained a BA Degree in Journalism from the University of Alabama in 1941. He served in US Navy from 1941 to 1946 as a PT Boat Captain in Squadrons 2, 3, and 31. He was commissioned as an Ensign, January 1, 1942. Kearney met John F. Kennedy in 1943 and maintained a close friendship with him until the President's death in 1963. Kearney served with PT's in the South Pacific from the Guadalcanal Campaign to Okinawa when World War II ended. He received a citation for his squadron's Guadalcanal Campaign of Reinforcement to the 1st Marines. He built, owned and operated radio station WHUC in New York State in 1946, until he sold it in 1958. Kearney was appointed as Collector of Customs with the U.S. Treasury Dept. in the Eisenhower Administration in 1958. From 1961 to 1968 he served as a Diplomat in the Kennedy Administration in Central America as a resident of Guatemala. He and his family moved to New Mexico in 1969, where he worked with the Indian Health Service. NASCI -- Milo N. Nasci, born October 2, 1937 resident of Post Fall, ID formerly of Albuquerque, went to be with Jesus, his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his family on May 1, 2009. He lived his 71 years with a generously love-filled heart for his family. Milo loved fishing, camping, and hunting. He favored both country and worship music, and regularly attended North Country Chapel. He was affectionately known to his children's friends as "Dad". His never ending sense of humor and quick wit brought laughter to everyone around him. Milo proudly served his country in the Army-Air National Guard, and as a reserve Sheriff in Bernalillo County, NM, for 15 years. He is preceded by his brother Lewis Nasci, parents Zahya "Rose" Nasci and Amelio "Milo" Nasci. PACHECO -- Libby Pacheco, 86, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, went home to be with our Lord on Thursday, May 21, 2009. She is survived by her siblings, Lily Jaramillo of Lancaster, CA, Gilly Pacheco of Albuquerque and Betty Barela of Belen; many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many special friends. Libby was preceded in death by her parents, Nicolas and Rumaldita Pacheco; siblings, Florenio Pacheco, Alice Chavez, Beatrice Lopez, and Juan Pacheco. She was born in Albuquerque on November 26, 1922 and later moved to Veguita, NM where she helped care for her mother. Libby took great pride in her service as a private secretary at Kirtland Air Force Base for over 30 years, from where she later retired. She was a dedicated member of her church, El Buen Samaritano UMC. She served as the church historian, sang in the choir and was an active member in the organization of United Methodist Women. Libby will be remembered for her profound faith, love and generosity towards her friends and family. PITKIN -- Jane Patricia Dancer Pitkin passed peacefully May 19, 2009, in her home in Albuquerque NM. Born May 30, 1921 in Lamoni, Iowa, she was the daughter of David Anderson Dancer & Florence Messerli; she was the eldest of three sisters. Jane's life was full and long, she was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to swim in Barton Springs everyday, spend time with family and friends, travel, play bridge, attend church, and much more. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters; her husband Arthur Pitkin; and her eldest daughter Patricia Cobb. Jane is survived by her two children, David and Coral; grandchildren, Scott (Karin), Liz, Jasmine (Donald), Teresa (Everett), Hannah and Eric; great-grandchildren, McCall, Mason, Trenton, Savannah, Grace, Augustin, and Alejandro, all of whom she took great joy. ROBISON -- Marjorie (Marge, Margie, Grammie) Ann Robison 69 passed away Monday, May 18, 2009 at Vista Care Hospice with family at her side ending her battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born to Lewis and Gladys Bemiss on January 30, 1940 in Chatham, NY where she lived until her early 20's. Spreading her wings, she moved to California for a short time and then landed in Albuquerque, NM where she worked as a bookkeeper before opening her own daycare in her home. She touched the lives of countless children and their families over the years. She stayed in contact with some of them right to her last day. A lifelong avid gardener, she was very proud of the bounty of fresh vegetables she was able to share with family and friends. She was also a prolific crafter with a love for sewing and crocheting. Marge is preceded in death by her loving partner Roger C. Lattanza who passed away in March of this year. She is survived by brothers Lewis Bemiss and wife Betty, and Edward Bemiss and wife Donna of Chatham NY, daughter Kelly Robison of Rochester, WA, sons Kevin Robison and wife Brenda of Tucson AZ, Kerry Robison and wife Tammy of College Station, TX, and Kory Robison and wife Karen of Albuquerque, NM. RUTLEDGE -- Therese Meyer Rutledge, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Therese was born March 3, 1932 the daughter of Jesse and Carmen Meyer in Albuquerque. She attended St. Mary's Catholic School, graduating in the class of 1951. Therese went on to get her degree in nursing from Hotel Dieu in El Paso, TX. She spent 34 years of nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. Therese was a very resourceful person, and nursing and caring for people was her passion. A Funeral Service will be held in Tyrus's honor on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Chapel of Albuquerque, 4001 Osuna NE. A private traditional Native American Burial will take place on Zia Pueblo. Tyrus will be missed dearly by his family and each heart he has touched through this tragedy. WELLS -- Fran Wells, 75, a resident of Albuquerque since 1983, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2009. She is survived by her two daughters, Jamie (Dusty) Wells and husband, Roger Titus, of Bosque Farms, NM, Stacie (Sandy) Wells-Kiefer and husband, TJ Kiefer, of Ft. Collins, CO; grandchildren, JC Wells and Jaden Titus of Bosque Farms; two sisters, Nancy Hawley and Betty Schriner; one brother, Terry L. Fenstermaker all of Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Wells was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Wells; parents; and one brother, Clinton Fenstermaker. She began her career in the United States Air Force as a surgical specialty nurse and after her honorable discharge, became a very caring, surgical and cancer nurse. Upon her retirement from UNM Cancer Research Center, she devoted the remainder of her life to her grandchildren, family and friends. Mrs. Wells was an extremely talented artist, craftswoman and gardener. Memorial Services will be held Sunday, May 24, 2009, 1:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd Chapel. WINTERS -- Kari Lee Winters, born February 28, 1951, passed away suddenly on Monday, May 18, 2009. She is survived by her mother, Leona Winters of MI; her goddaughter Krystal Javien and husband Joe of CA; special friends Gary Rhode and Wuffy of CA, Jenn Sandstrom, Joann Valentine, Vicki Sandstrom, Lexi Kelly of NM and Darlene Arden of MA; and a lifetime of friends and homemade family. Kari spent many years as a psychiatric nurse at UCLA. She moved to Albuquerque in the winter of 2006. She began to write articles for various pet publications such as Cat Fancy, The Pet Press and others. Kari spent much of her life helping animal welfare and rescue operations in CA and NM, working with The Amanda Foundation, Southern California Siamese Rescue and most recently with Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres and Save a Mexican Mutt. She was an advocate for animal welfare and protection, working to help better the lives of animals everywhere. She was an active foster parent for animals in need, opening her home and giving of herself selflessly. She will be missed by animals and humans alike. In lieu of flowers a donation to Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres or The Ricky Fund at The Winn Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
