MASON -- Leo Mason, 94, a long time resident of Albuquerque, passed away at home on Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Leo was born on November 24, 1914, in Malone, Texas, to Christopher Columbus "Lum" and Maud E. Keele Mason. After being raised in Texas, Leo moved to Albuquerque at about age 23. In the summer of 1939, while working on a job building a school near Wichita, Kansas, Leo had a blind date with Lucille Minnie Helen Meyer. The following April, Leo sent Lucille a bus ticket to come to Albuquerque. After looking up Albuquerque on the map, Lucille headed to Albuquerque. They were married in Albuquerque on November 30, 1940, at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Pastor Schmidt. Leo worked in the building business in Albuquerque until January 1944 when he enlisted in the United States Army proudly serving our country during World War II from January 11, 1944 until February 8, 1946. Leo was assigned to the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment in the European Theater of Operation for 17 months and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Leo received the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, the EAME Theater Ribbon, and three Bronze Service Stars. After returning to Albuquerque after World War II, Leo continued in the building business and later formed Leo Mason Builders. He continued in that business until his retirement in the early 70s. Leo has passed along his building knowledge, his sense of work perfection, and his work ethics to his son, Carl and grandson, Chris. Leo and Lucille loved spending time in the Brazos area near Chama, New Mexico where they built and still have a cabin. They were always involved with various activities in the Brazos community including the community water system and the property owners association. During this retirement years, Leo enjoyed his vegetable garden including his tomatoes and the walnuts and pecans produced from his trees which were enjoyed by his family, friends, and neighbors. Leo was a long time member of Christ Lutheran Church. Leo is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille; son, Carl Mason and wife, Jill of Albuquerque; grandson, Christopher and wife, Jennifer; great-grandson, Cory all of Albuquerque; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher Columbus "Lum" and Maude Mason; sisters, Fannie Lee Harris, Anna Kathleen Wasmer and Fayola Wader. Services will be held Monday, May 11, 2009, 10:00 a.m., at Christ Lutheran Church, 7701 Candelaria NE. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Friends and family may visit Mr. Mason Sunday, May 10, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel.
