LEROY -- John H. (Jack) LeRoy III lost his battle against a rare lymphoma, "AILT", March 9, 2009. He died at home with his loving family present. Born in Lynchburg, VA. May 17, 1930, Jack grew up in Elizabeth City, NC. After graduation from Fort Union Military Academy and North Carolina State University, he served as navigator during the Korean conflict until 1954. He retired from Sandia National Labs in 1990. Jack loved the mountains of New Mexico, but part of his heart sails on in Albemarle Sound. His favorite place was the family cabin in the Jemez. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia "Bing" (Snedeker) LeRoy; their children, Robert LeRoy and wife Diana, and Adrienne "Tammy" Morrison and husband David; grandchildren Sheena and Heather Morrison, Justin LeRoy, and Jon LeRoy and wife Holly; and great-granddaughter, Sophie. His family will always remember the wonderful smile of this devoted and gentle man, who always defended the underdog, especially those basketball and baseball teams usually at the bottom of the standings. We will all miss his special ability to sort through the gibberish to find the heart of an issue. He lived life his way, endeavoring always to keep it simple and serene. It was a thoughtful life, filled with a love of nature, the midnight sky and stars, the moon and the sun. A private service was held. He will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Donations may be made to: Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center, 2901 Candelaria Rd NW, ABQ, NM 87107.
