GALLUP -- Arthur Stanley Gallup, 86, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2009 in Owensboro, KY. Stan, an outstanding athlete himself, was the driving force behind the National Golden Gloves of America amateur boxing program in the United States for 45 years. Known to many in the boxing circles as "Mr. Golden Gloves", he served as Executive Director of the organization until 1999 and was inducted into the National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame in 1979 in recognition of his leadership and dedication to the sport of boxing. He is one of only three Emeritus members of the National Golden Gloves Board of Directors. He was commissioned as Colonel-Aid-de-Camp on the Governor of New Mexico's staff and was honored when the City of Knoxville, TN, proclaimed "Stan Gallup Day" on May 19, 1984. After serving three years in China in the Army Air Corps as a member of the legendary Flying Tigers during World War II, he settled in Roswell, NM and was part owner of a radio station that sponsored the Golden Gloves. While in Roswell, he was named New Mexico Sportscaster of the Year in 1959 and 1960. For the past 20 years, he also served as Vice President of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) and judged and supervised championship fights around the world. An All-State athlete in football and basketball at Santa Fe St. Michaels High School, he attended the University of New Mexico on a football scholarship before enlisting in the service during World War II. Stan loved the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers and his association with the student-athletes, athletic staff and fans. He was preceded in death in 1991 by Sue, his wife of 49 years, and is survived by his son, Gary; daughter-in-law, Sharon; grandsons, Mike Gallup of The Colony, TX, Greg Gallup, of Hattiesburg, MS; and granddaughters, Gina Gallup of Houston, TX and Jana Marshall, of Houston TX; and nine great-grand children. Services were held Wednesday, February 25, 2009, 11:30 a.m. at The Tapscott Chapel at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Stan Gallup Athletic Memorial Scholarship c/o Kentucky Wesleyan Athletic Department 3000 Frederica Street, Owensboro, Kentucky 42301. Following the Kentucky services, a Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 28, 2009, 12:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel.
