RYAN -- Thomas J. Ryan, age 78, a resident of Albuquerque, NM and The Woodlands, TX, passed away Friday, January 2, 2009. He was born in Dubuque, Iowa and moved to Albuquerque in 1954 after serving two years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He attended Loras Academy, Loras College and Bayless Business College in Dubuque before going to work for the Dubuque Thrift Plan as Assistant Manager. He was employed by the Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union in Albuquerque as Assistant Manager from 1954 to 1958 and by First Financial Credit Union (formerly Albuquerque Bell Federal Credit Union) and Credit Union Services, their subsidiary, as President, from 1958 to 1990 when he retired. During his credit union years, he served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions for 12 years. Serving as Chairman of numerous committees and receiving their Legislative award in 1976 and Professional of the year award in 1981. He also served on the Board of Directors of the NM Credit Union League for three years receiving their Outstanding Credit Union Leader Award and the Chairman's Club Award from the Credit Union Executives Society. As President of First Financial Credit Union his accomplishments were numerous and still evident in New Mexico credit unions today. He devised an open end loan process that many credit unions still use which was promoted by the NM Credit Union League. He was Instrumental in the construction of the Credit Union's Headquarters building at 601 Tijeras, N.W., Albuquerque, NM. Services were expanded to include checking accounts, certificates of deposits safe deposit boxes, credit cards and ATMs. He trademarked the ATM "CU Anytime" logo so all credit unions in New Mexico could utilize and join a common network. He incorporated the first credit union services corporation in New Mexico so member services could be expanded even to include the sale of securities, mutual funds and insurance products. He was preceded in death by his father Dr. Emmitt Ryan; mother Jennie Ryan of Dubuque, Iowa and brother David Ryan of San Angelo, TX. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Ryan; son Stephen Ryan of Albuquerque; daughter Linda Parks and husband Scott of The Woodlands, TX; son James Ryan and wife Deborah of Rio Rancho, NM; son William Ryan and wife Chris of Matthews, NC; daughter Judy Apel and husband Francis of Stoughton, WI; and daughter Jennifer Spear and husband Dean of Rio Rancho, NM; brother Roger Ryan and his wife Marian of Cerritos, CA; sister Virginia "Ditzy" Bakewell of Gilbert, AZ; sister-in-law Mary Alyce of San Angelo, TX; sister Marilyn Zurek of Omaha, NE; sister Geri Ryan of Dubuque, IA and sister Marjorie Shaver of Battle Creek, MI. He was also survived by thirteen grandchildren Kari & Kristi Parks; Jason & Alan Ryan; Jenna & Jeramie Ryan; Zoe, Thomas, Rebekah & Benjamin Apel; Matthew, Sarah & Michelle Spear. He was a member of The Shrine of Saint Bernadette Catholic Church for 50 years, serving on the Building Committee when the original church and hall were built. He was also a Lector and Eucharistic Minister for many years. He loved to play golf with his friends Jerry, Ray, Erick and Cliff. Visitation will be held Friday, January 9, 2009, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at Daniels Family Funeral Services. A Mass of Christian Burial is set for Saturday, January 10, 2009, at 9:00 a.m., at The Shrine of Saint Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Blvd. NE. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven.
