BOONE -- IRENE U. BOONE Longtime Pediatrician, Dr. Irene U. Boone, 86, died peacefully January 4, 2009 at her home. By her side were her husband Zenas "Slim" Boone and her beloved dog Jeffie. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ann and George Uhrik; a brother, John Uhrik; and a sister, Ann Gonko. Dr. Boone was born October 13, 1922 in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Penn State in 1943 with a BS and went on to get her Masters in Microbiology and Biochemistry. In 1946, Dr. Boone was recruited to Los Alamos and worked as a section leader in Cellular Biology at the Health Research Division of Los Alamos National Lab. After a year at LANL, she started Medical School at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She returned each summer to work for LANL, and the second year of Med School married "Slim" Boone in Santa Fe, NM. She went on to graduate from George Washington University, with distinction, in 1951. Following an Internship at Salt Lake General Hospital, Dr. Boone returned to Los Alamos and her work at LANL as a staff member in Cellular Biology until 1965. Dr. Boone left LANL to complete a Residency in Pediatrics at Denver Children's and was a fellow in adolescent medicine at the University of Colorado. In 1967 Dr. Boone opened her Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Practice in Los Alamos Medical Center. Fulfilling her love for teaching, Dr. Boone served on the faculty at University of New Mexico Medical School. She retired from Medicine in 1998. Dr. Boone enjoyed golfing and loved the time spent in their Taos cabin. She is survived by her husband, Slim Boone; her sister Julie Beck; nieces: Leslie Geer, Michael Beck, and Kathy Beck. Services will be held Friday, January 9, 2009, 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Los Alamos with burial to follow at Guaje Pines Cemetery.
