BUNKER -- Merle Eugene Bunker, 85, passed away in Albuquerque, NM on Thursday, December 4, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Bunker; two sons, Bruce Bunker and wife, Cathy and Paul Bunker and wife, Koleen; one grandson, Ross Bunker; and other relatives and friends. Merle was preceded in death by his parents, Noah and Ada Spitler Bunker; and one son, Brian Bunker. He was born on February 8, 1923 in Kansas City, MO and graduated from Union City High School in Union City, IN. Merle attended Indiana University and Purdue University, receiving a PhD in Nuclear Physics. He served in the United States Army during WWII, serving at Oak Ridge on the Manhattan Project. Merle went to work at Los Alamos National Labs, in New Mexico, in 1950 where he worked until his retirement 40 years later. During that time, he established an international reputation in nuclear spectroscopy and high energy nuclear physics, and was the manager of the Los Alamos Omega Canyon Research Reactor. Merle enjoyed a wide range of outdoors activities, including bird watching, gardening, golfing and hiking. He also loved astronomy and woodworking. More than anything, he loved and supported his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
