HATTOX -- Jerry Hattox, 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 1942, died Saturday, September 13, 2008 unexpectedly. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma Hattox; two daughters, Keri Ann Small and husband Gary of The Woodlands, TX and Linda Lee Toppert and husband Bob of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Roy and Jenny Small and Cody and Chad Toppert; sister, Irene Childres of Texas; and numerous other relatives and friends. Jerry was born on December 4, 1924 in Fitzhugh, OK to William and Myrtle McLachlan Hattox. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Jerry married Wilma Long on October 12, 1946. He and his Western Building Supply Company, have been "fixtures" in the Albuquerque and New Mexico home building industries for over 30 years. Jerry's quick smile, ready handshake, and his cowboy hat graced many thousands of construction industry gatherings over the years. Usually with his wife Wilma at his side, Jerry was always eager to talk about windows and doors and the Lobos. Jerry was a member of New Mexico Home Builders Association since 1971, has been on the New Mexico HBA Board of Directors for the past 30 years, and was active with the local and national "home builders" groups since the 1950s. In 1974, New Mexico HBA awarded Associate of the Year to Jerry, an award presented each year to a non-builder supporting member for outstanding service to his association and to the home building industry. Jerry became the first New Mexico HBA Associate Vice President when that position was created in 1990 and served in that position until 1994. In honor of Jerry, the name of the Associate of the Year Award was changed in 1997 to the Jerry Hattox Distinguished Service Award and remains that to this day. He was a member of the Lobo Club, Shriners, the Albuquerque Tips Club, the Republican Party and a NRA Life member. Jerry was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 8600 Academy Rd.
