LEARN -- G. Emerson Learn, III, 68, passed away on Sunday evening, June 29, 2008 at his home. At the time of his passing, Emerson was surrounded by family and his dog, Chaco. Emerson Learn was born in 1939 and grew up in Mt. Morris, NY. His parents were G. Emerson Learn II and Edna Ruth Learn. He attended Hobart College, where he received his Bachelor of Science and played la crosse and football. He was in the US Air Force and married Cheryl Demerath in 1962. He was the proud father of George Emerson Learn, IV and his wife Suzanne Raia, Deborah Learn Breitfeld and her husband Wolfram Breitfeld, and Rachel Learn Mayercek and her husband Sean Mayercek. Emerson was also grandfather (Opie) to five wonderful grandchildren, George Emerson Learn, V, Grace Elizabeth Learn, Lorelei Rachel Breitfeld, Gretchen Maria Breitfeld, and Ian Charles Andrew Mayercek. Emerson was the oldest of seven children and is survived by siblings Sallie, Jim, Richard, Cathie, Christine, and Janet, and their families. Emerson enjoyed a distinguished 35-year career with Merrill Lynch where his outgoing personality served him well. An avid athlete, Emerson ran almost every day. He also enjoyed cycling, swimming, golfing, and skiing in Taos. Emerson was also very involved in Bosque del Apache where he quickly became well-versed on most of the wildlife living in the area. He served as the president of The Friends of the Bosque non-profit organization for many years. Emerson's generosity was evident by his support of local athletes, his contribution to the Bosque del Apache, and his belief in education was evident in the fact that he helped seven of his family members receive higher education degrees. A Celebration of Emerson's Life will be held on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael's and All Angels Church located just west of Fourth Street on Montano, reception to follow. Since red was Emerson's favorite color, you may wish to join the family in wearing something red in his honor. In lieu of flowers, please make charitable donations to Emerson Learn Scholarship Endowment at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Funds will be used for educational field trips for New Mexico's school children to Bosque del Apache. Donations may be sent c/o Friends of Bosque del Apache, PO Box 340, San Antonio, NM 87832.
