BAUER -- Dallas Dee Bauer, born November 16, 1943 in Portsmouth, NH, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2008 in Albuquerque. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, John Bauer; two daughters, Suzanne and Holly; and many friends. Dee worked for UNM, until her retirement in 2006. BRASWELL -- Shirley Jean Braswell, 72, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968, passed away on Friday, July 4, 2008 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Jean is survived by two sons, Danny Braswell and wife Diana of Richmond, VA and Bruce Braswell and wife Julie of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Cody and Dustin Braswell of Albuquerque and Alysa Braswell of Los Angeles, CA. Jean was born in Rentz, GA. Surviving family include brothers, Lamar, Mike, H.W., and Billy Daniel; sister, Barbara Pope; extended family and loving friend, Adele Freebus of Albuquerque. BURMEISTER -- Bruce D. Burmeister, 51, of S. Spencer Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away June 21, 2008 in Springfield, MO. A Celebration of Bruce's Life is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2008, 2:00 PM, at Denton-Wood Funeral Home Chapel. Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will provide military honors at the Elks Lodge # 1558 following the service. There will be a reception following the services at the Elks Lodge # 1558, Carlsbad, NM. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Bruce D. Burmeister was born June 24, 1956 in Appleton, WI to Phillip K. and Carol M. (Buss) Burmeister. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. Bruce was an avid golfer, bowler, hunter, fisherman, snow-skier, best friend, and "brother" to many people. He was a business partner in Adobe Precision Gear, Inc. and was a member of the Elks Lodge # 1558. CLARK -- Dorothy Quin Clark; Born on February 1, 1929 in Denver, CO passed away in Rio Rancho, NM on July 2, 2008. Dorothy was the daughter of Robert and Inez Quin, and the wife of Clarence O. Clark. Dorothy grew up in Cheyenne, WY and graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1947. Dorothy attended the University of Wyoming for two years, and then married Clarence Clark, who was stationed at the Air Force Base in Cheyenne. Dorothy and her family traveled to Europe twice, and after 26 years of serving in the Air Force, made Albuquerque their home. Dorothy was the mother to two daughters, Colleen Clark Trout (husband: Steve Trout) and Cindy Clark-Thompson (husband: Jeff Thompson); and the grandmother to Aaron James Forrester (wife: Alison Forrester), Scott Clark Forrester (wife: Alissa Forrester), and Jackie Clark Trout. In addition, Dorothy is survived by her sister, Jo Ann Broyles; and three great grandchildren, Austin, Alex, and Ava. Dorothy worked as a New Mexico Human Services Income Support Worker for twenty years. Dorothy was appointed by Governor Bruce King to the Commission of Human Rights where she served for five years. During retirement Dorothy made quilts for teenage mothers and their babies and spent time with her family and friends. The family of Dorothy would like to thank the following for providing such good and loving care to her during her time of illness; Sandia Springs Assisted Living and the Vista Care Hospice Program. Dorothy loved the ocean and has requested that her family distribute her remains over the waters of Florida. EKER -- James Edward Eker was born September 1, 1929 in Mooreland, OK to Lee Ernest and Lena Belle (Childers) Eker. He passed away Thursday June 19, 2008, at the age of 78 years. Jim graduated from Mooreland High School in 1947, and then attended Oklahoma University. On November 23, 1950 he was united in marriage to Carrie Ellabell Swigart in Mooreland, OK. To this union three sons were born, Dennis, Don, and Darrell. The family made their home in Oklahoma until they moved to Albuquerque, NM in 1986. Most of Jim's professional life was in sales. Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving as a youth leader in Oklahoma. He was also very involved in the Boy Scouts of America. In his youth he was a Boy Scout, and in 1959 he helped start a scout troop for handicapped children in Woodward, OK, the first such troop in northwest Oklahoma. He served the troop as Assistant Scoutmaster. He attended adult training at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and as his own sons progressed in scouting, was a Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and Assistant District Commissioner for the Boiling Springs District in northwest Oklahoma. Jim was a Mason for 57 years, first belonging to the Mooreland Lodge No. 387. After moving to Albuquerque he became a member of the Hiram Lodge No. 13 on December 19, 1987. He was inducted into the Scottish Rite on May 5, 1991 and joined the Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, Albuquerque, New Mexico on the same date. Jim really enjoyed working with kids and joined the Clown Unit of the Temple in September, 1991. He was an avid Oklahoma University football fan. Jim loved camping, fishing, and rock hunting. He also enjoyed traveling, golfing, and lapidary work. Jim made beautiful jewelry and did the faceting of the stones himself. His greatest joy of recent years was watching his grandchildren grow, attending their sports and theater events and just enjoying their company. Jim is survived by his wife, Ellabell; three children, Dennis and wife, Patricia, Don and wife, Stephanie, and Darrell and wife, Marsha, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Nicholas Eker, Courtney Eker, Bill Malone, Bob Malone, Josh Montano and Jessica Montano; great-gandchildren, Kai Montano and Payton Montano. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Lena Eker; and his brother, Robert Eker. A Private Burial Service, with family present, was held at Sunset Memorial Park under the direction of French Mortuary with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. ELY -- Daniel (Dan) Ely, 84, finished his full and successful life June 26, 2008 at his home on Nettles Island, FL with his devoted and beloved wife, Betty, at his side. Dan was born September 15, 1923 in Chicago, IL to George and Josephine Ely. He is survived by wife Betty; step-daughter Terry Dean and husband John of Houston, TX. Six children from his marriage with Katy Lou McIntosh: David Ely, Todd Ely and wife, Terry, Melissa Ely Martinez and husband, Louis, all of Albuquerque, Erin Ely and Doug Bielefeldt of Eugene OR; Therese Ely-Schmitter and husband, Dan of Seattle, WA, and Laura Ely of San Francisco, CA; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister Joanne McIntosh of San Jose, CA and cousin Stan Reinisch of Chicago, IL. Private services were held in Florida. Dan graduated from High School and the Sea Scouts in Chicago and moved to Albuquerque during the 1940s to attend UNM. While at UNM, he played football and served in the Navy ROTC and made many long-lasting friendships. He graduated and received his Navy commission and was stationed in the Pacific during WWII and remained in the Navy Reserve for many years after returning home. He soon found he enjoyed sales and made a career in automobile retailing that led to his operating the Dan Ely Buick GMC Honda auto dealership in Albuquerque. He had particular interest in the RV industry including manufacturing a line of pickup campers. He was active in both the New Mexico and National Automobile Dealers Associations and GMC Dealer Advisory Board, serving on the boards and on many committees. Also, during his time in Albuquerque, he was active in the community with the Republican Party, particularly the Dave Cargo for Governor Campaign as Chairman and Treasurer; and Co-Chair of the Governor's Inaugural Committee. He also was a member of the UNM Lobo Club where he served on committees and was especially supportive of Coach Bob King and the UNM Men's Basketball program. Dan was appointed to the Board of the New Mexico Springer Boys School. He continued these activities until he sold his business and semi retired to Florida. In Florida, he was active in his community on Nettles Island (an RV Condominium vacation community), elected to the Nettles Island HOA Board and served on the St. Lucie County Code Enforcement Board. He continued his sales career on a semi-retired basis in Condominium sales and tried to wear out his boat and fishing gear by fishing as much as possible. Just as in Albuquerque, Dan made many friends on Nettles Island. Our husband, father and friend will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. FAJARDO -- Josephine E. Fajardo, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, was born March 6, 1945. A lifelong resident of Albuquerque, she was called home to be with her loving Lord, unexpectedly on Monday, June 30, 2008 at the age of 63, after an injury. Josephine graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1965. She married Billy Davis in 1969 and started her family, eventually having two daughters. She was a member of San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church. Josephine was preceded in death by her father, Jose P. Fajardo; and her mother, Carolina Fajardo; brothers, Benny and Paul; great-granddaughter, Mariah Davis Tapia. FOSTER -- Robert P. "Bob" Foster, 65, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973, passed away Friday, July 4, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Treva Foster of Albuquerque; sons, Eric Foster of Albuquerque, Kurt Foster of Las Vegas, NV, and Cody Hanson and wife, Cindy of Santa Fe, NM; four grandchildren, Dylan and Audrey Foster, and Isabella and Cody James Hanson; brothers, John Foster and wife, Sylvia of Salida, CO and Jim Foster and wife, Karen of Howard, CO; four nieces, Diane, Christie, Myra, and Johnna; and special friends, Dianne and Romeo DiLallo. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Beryl Foster. He was born in Denver, CO on February 14, 1943 and graduated from Salida High School. He served in the Army Security Intelligence Agency from 1962 to 1965. Upon his honorable discharge Bob graduated from Southern Colorado State College in Pueblo, CO with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He then pursued a career in insurance working for Fidelity Union and American General Insurance Companies and in 1978 became a State Farm Agent in Cedar Crest, NM, retiring in 2000. Bob loved aviation, boating, fishing, spending time on his computer, and his little dog, Clancy. He served as Post Commander of the American Legion, was a founding member of the East Mountain Chamber of Commerce, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. His greatest love was his family and his grandchildren. GALLEGOS -- Benjamin (Bennie) Gallegos, 85 of Vaughn, NM died Wednesday, July 2, 2008. He passed away peacefully in the company of his loving family. Bennie was born October 12, 1922 to the ranching family of Concha and Juan Gallegos of Pinos Wells, NM. He was a World War II veteran, a lifelong member of the Sociadad de San Jose de Pinos Wells, NM and an active parishioner of St. Mary's Parish in Vaughn, NM. He is survived by his wife Corine; his loving spouse of 62 years; one son Jude Gallegos and wife Diana of Vaughn; two daughters, Inez Carter and husband Alan of Aztec, NM and Louisa Gallegos of Encino, NM; one grandson, Matthew Gallegos and wife Giselle of Las Cruces, NM; two great-grandsons, Matthew Robert and Nathaniel, also of Las Cruces. His sibling survivors are Emma Blythe of Albuquerque; Ray Gallegos of Vaughn, and Mike Gallegos of Albuquerque along with many loved nieces and nephews. HAYS -- Mary Lou Hays, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, went home to be with our Lord on Friday, July 4, 2008. She is survived by her son, Gerald Heise and wife Betty of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Michael Heise of St. Paul, MN and Susie Fitzgerald and husband Daniel of Winston-Salem, NC; brother, Jeff Hays of Evansville, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother. Mary Lou was a successful water rights broker in the Albuquerque area. She had a special love for animals, especially cats. She was charitable to many organizations including Native American missions and the Roman Catholic ministries. HUME -- Margaret C. Hume, 86, a resident of Rio Rancho for over 25 years, died Monday, June 30, 2008. The daughter of John H. and Margaret (Fischer) Clarke, Margaret was born in Brooklyn, NY, January 29, 1922. After retiring from AT & T, Margaret and her husband, Frank, moved from New York to Rio Rancho in the early eighties. During their years in Rio Rancho, they were both active in several area groups. Margaret was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Telephone Pioneers, and the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. She also actively contributed to numerous children's organizations. Margaret was a prolific knitter. She made and donated many blankets, sweaters, booties, and lap blankets over the years. Margaret also loved to travel and kept her mind keen by working crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband in December 2000. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Karen Pangrazzi and husband Bob of Wiesbaden, Germany and her two grandsons, Rob and Scott Pangrazzi. Visitation will be Sunday, July 6, 2008 from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services, 4310 Sara Rd at Meadowlark Ln, Rio Rancho. LEARN -- G. Emerson Learn, III, 68, passed away on Sunday evening, June 29, 2008 at his home. At the time of his passing, Emerson was surrounded by family and his dog, Chaco. Emerson Learn was born in 1939 and grew up in Mt. Morris, NY. His parents were G. Emerson Learn II and Edna Ruth Learn. He attended Hobart College, where he received his Bachelor of Science and played la crosse and football. He was in the US Air Force and married Cheryl Demerath in 1962. He was the proud father of George Emerson Learn, IV and his wife Suzanne Raia, Deborah Learn Breitfeld and her husband Wolfram Breitfeld, and Rachel Learn Mayercek and her husband Sean Mayercek. Emerson was also grandfather (Opie) to five wonderful grandchildren, George Emerson Learn, V, Grace Elizabeth Learn, Lorelei Rachel Breitfeld, Gretchen Maria Breitfeld, and Ian Charles Andrew Mayercek. Emerson was the oldest of seven children and is survived by siblings Sallie, Jim, Richard, Cathie, Christine, and Janet, and their families. Emerson enjoyed a distinguished 35-year career with Merrill Lynch where his outgoing personality served him well. An avid athlete, Emerson ran almost every day. He also enjoyed cycling, swimming, golfing, and skiing in Taos. Emerson was also very involved in Bosque del Apache where he quickly became well-versed on most of the wildlife living in the area. He served as the president of The Friends of the Bosque non-profit organization for many years. Emerson's generosity was evident by his support of local athletes, his contribution to the Bosque del Apache, and his belief in education was evident in the fact that he helped seven of his family members receive higher education degrees. A Celebration of Emerson's Life will be held on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael's and All Angels Church located just west of Fourth Street on Montano, reception to follow. Since red was Emerson's favorite color, you may wish to join the family in wearing something red in his honor. In lieu of flowers, please make charitable donations to Emerson Learn Scholarship Endowment at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. MARBERRY -- Phyllis Taylor Marberry, 81, born Monday May 16, 1927 in Albuquerque, NM, to George and Dorothy Taylor, died Tuesday, July 2, 2008. She is survived by her beloved three children David Marberry and wife, Nancy, Phillip Marberry and wife, Karen, Ellen Marberry and Dwayne; six grandchildren, Justin Bramhall, Emily and Gregory Marberry, Melissa and Jennifer Marberry, Tiffany Jones; four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Trace, Kimberlynn and Justin, Jr.; and her beloved dog, Tang. She was preceded in death by her brother, George. Phyllis retired from UNM Continuing Education, became a realtor, which she retired from in 2004. She was an active community volunteer for many years including, being a Girl Scout leader for seven years, serving on the board of United Way, and several other community boards. Phyllis also served as director of the Arts and Crafts Fair the last year it was held in Old Town. She graduated from Albuquerque High School and attended UNM. Phyllis was a member of Chapter V PEO, Junior League, and the Albuquerque Tennis Club. MORGAN -- Alice Ruth Morgan, 74, passed away at her home in Albuquerque. Alice pioneered many groundbreaking opportunities for women in the Bachelors and Masters programs in Business Administration at the University of New Mexico, and also accomplished many firsts for women in her career at Sandia National Laboratories. She was born Alice R. Smith on April 1, 1934 Petersburg, TX. She graduated from Eunice High School 1952. She received her Bachelors of Business Administration from UNM 1956 where she was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, National Scholastic Honor Society, and had the highest grades of any woman in her class. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. Received a Masters of Business Administration from UNM 1969, where she was one of the first six women ever to graduate with an MBA at UNM. Her career at Sandia National Laboratories (1963-1993) included the positions of contracting representative in purchasing, supervisor of payment control and accounting section, supervisor of travel and relocation, supervisor of employee accounting division, and promoted to manager of the finance department in 1984 where she served until she retired in 1993. Alice and husband Alfred enjoyed being active at Saint Marks on the Mesa Church, traveling, skiing, attending the theater and symphony. Alice's professional and community involvements included Board of Directors of Family and Children's Services, member of National Corporate Cash Management Association, National Association of Accountants, Mortar Board Alumni Association, Chi Omega Alumni Association, and Coronado Ski Club. She is preceded by her beloved parents Cloyd D. Smith and Lula Bell Smith. She is survived by her beloved husband, Alfred C. Morgan; her brother CD (Irene) Smith; and sisters-in-law Rosie Owens, Harriet (Paul) Hixenbaugh, Phoebe Trimmer; and brother-in-law Oyer Morgan. She is also survived by her loving children, Steven and Linda Miner, Kevin and Sandra Miner, Mike Morgan, Janice and J.L. Bray; and grandchildren, Riley and Ryan Miner, Katie, Jake and Kelsey Bray; and many nieces and nephews. NUNEZ -- Joe Lucio Nunez, 86, a life long resident of Albuquerque, after a battle with cancer, went home to the Lord with his family at his side on Monday, June 30, 2008. Joe was a Sgt in WWII with the US Army. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose Marquez Nunez; his six daughters Patricia Funes (Felix), Toni Gallegos (Johnny), Judith Nunez, Jackie Ortiz (Ronnie), Victoria Nunez and Darlene Dimas (Ray); 24 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; sister Juanita Martinez and brother Pablo Nunez. He was preceded in death by his great-grandson Jordan Greigo and sons David and Alexander Nunez. RAMIREZ -- Frances Ramirez was born on March 9, 1973 and died on July 4, 2008. She was born in Mesquite, NM. On April 14, 1993 she married Lonnie Ramirez, and together they had three boys. She leaves behind for a short time her husband, Lonnie; and their three sons Lonnie, Joshua, Justin; and her step-son Isaac Ramirez; her sister, Sonia Nancy Gaytan; and her brother, Juan Javier Alarcon and his wife Christina Alarcon; her sister-in-law; mother, Irma Alarcon. She was preceded in death by her father Javier Gaytan, who died in 1978. She was the mother of three sons, and dedicated her life to raising these children and supporting her husband. Frances loved her husband, Lonnie, and her sons with all her heart. Frances was a very loving and caring person to everyone that came into her life. She will be missed. A Viewing will take place at Riverside Funeral Home on Sunday, July 6, 2008 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., followed by a Prayer Service at 6 p.m. A Funeral Service will take place on Monday, July 7, 2008 at 10 a.m., also at Riverside Funeral Home. RUNYON -- John Robert "Bob" Runyon, 72, of Punta Gorda, FL, died early Thursday morning, July 3, 2008 after a long illness at Charlotte Regional Medical Center in Punta Gorda. Born in Perth Amboy, NJ, Bob was a retired SMSGT in the United States Air Force. He served his country proudly for 22 and one half years. After retiring, he pursued an interest in and frequently visited the Indians from the Darien Province in Panama. He loved helping these people and considered this his favorite home. Bob earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska, and worked in various fields of law enforcement for several years before moving to Florida in 1992. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Punta Gorda Lions Club. Bob is survived by his loving family, wife Mary; five children, Mark Runyon of Englewood, FL, Robert Gudfinnsson of Iceland, Debbie Runyon of Janesville, WI, Veronica Runyon and Roberta Duck, both of Albuquerque, NM; three stepchildren, Thomas Dvorak of Leawood, KS, Anne Sewell of Lenexa, KS, and Sheila Ireland of Omaha, NE, and 15 grandchildren. SHOCK -- Patricia Shock, 83, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008 at the family home. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James J. SPEER -- John B. Speer, 87, also known as Jack, died at home, Saturday, June 28, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Ruth Speer; daughter, Margaret Ann Abercrombie both of Albuquerque; son, Edward Speer and wife, Debra of Redding, CA; grandchildren, Jessica and Joseph Abercrombie of Corrales and Sierra and Cameron Speer of Redding, CA; sister, Martha Eskridge of Tulsa; nieces and nephews, Judy Ferguson, Walter Eskridge, Marian Sexton, James Paul Speer III, Ann Ashliman, Jeffrey Speer and George Speer; sisters-in-law, Dikki Speer of Alpine, TX and Helen Mitchell; brother-in-law, Robert Cox of Eugene, OR; and Swiss exchange student, Tom Flueler. Jack was preceded in death by his brothers, James Paul Speer II and Louis Kincaid Speer. He received his B.A. degree from George Washington University and after WWII his LLB from the University of Washington. During WWII he worked for the Lend Lease Administration as an administrative aide for the American Food Mission to French North Africa. During his lifetime, he was a registered parlia mentarian; wrote a history of early science fiction fandom and the Fancyclopedia; and created a true-to-history civil war game. He was called "one of the pioneer historians of fandom," by SF author Harry L. Warner, Jr. Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Albuquerque Parliamentary Unit, the Science Fiction Society, the N.M. Space Society, New Mexicans for Science & Reason, Tennis Club of Albuquerque and the Exchange Club. Services will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2008, 10:30 a.m. at French Mortuary, University Chapel. TOLAN -- Anne Tolan, 61, died at home in Albuquerque, Thursday, July 3, 2008. She is survived by her friend and companion, Mary Crenner; sister, Mary Weber and husband Jack; brothers, James Tolan and wife Gloria, William Tolan and wife Lori, Harold J Tolan and partner Alaine and sister Catherine Hollowell and husband Richard; long time friend, Paula Tsosie and; many other family and friends. Anne was born in Lansing, MI, graduated from Msgr John A Gabriel High School, and served her country in the US Navy Medical Corp. She then worked as a Physicians Assistant with Indian Health Services at the Santa Clara Pueblo, and later transferred to the V A Regional Hospital in Albuquerque before retiring in 2007. She was an avid reader and loved the outdoors, especially fly fishing and sailing. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Snows in Hessel, MI in August. TVERDIK -- Ann K. Tverdik, age 69, passed away July 1, 2008. She was born September 5, 1938 in Torrance, CA . Ann was a woman with a vibrant smile and a kind heart. She would do anything for her family and friends. She knew what she wanted and worked hard to get it. She touched the hearts and lives of all she knew. She found great friends in her favorite pastime, "The Lucky Ones" online gaming league. They were not just gaming buddies, but a constant source of friendship, happiness and support. Her legacy is four children that she taught to be loving, passionate, and compassionate. By her example, she showed them they have the inner strength and love to overcome any challenges. We will miss her. Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Tverdik. She is survived by two daughters, Julie Salazar and Judith Reese; two sons, William Reese and Randall Reese; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Darleen Johnson; other family and friends who loved and will miss her. VAN PELT -- Jacqueline Van Pelt (Jackie) went home to Jesus on Tuesday, July 1, 2008. Jackie was born September 24, 1982. She attended Osuna Elementary School, Madison Middle School, and graduated from Sandia High School in May, 2001. She immediately went to the University of New Mexico, with tuition paid by the lottery scholarship, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 2005 with an endorsement in ESL (English as a second language). She also received her masters at UNM in Language, Literature, and Social Cultural Studies on May 12, 2007. She worked part time for Bob Edwards State Farm Insurance Co. while she attended college. Her passion was teaching school, and she received her first teaching assignment as a second grade teacher at Kit Carson Elementary. She loved her students and they loved her. Jackie's favorite hobby was traveling. She was a big Ricky Martin fan and attended several concerts, traveling as far as Puerto Rico to see him. She enjoyed music, played the piano, and sang in the church choir for midnight mass. Jackie is survived by her parents, Dave and Patti Van Pelt; her brother, Dave and wife, Nicole; her two nephews, Kyle and Zack Van Pelt; and many, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; too many to mention. Thanks to all of our friends and relatives for their lifetime of support for Jackie. We could not have done it without you.
