CHAVEZ -- Ferminia "Fannie" Chavez, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. An extraordinary mother, a beautiful wife and a great woman of Faith, Fannie placed God and family above all else. She was born in Albuquerque on January 8, 1927 to Tranquilino and Julianita Chavez. Fannie was blessed with a loving childhood surrounded by her many brothers and sisters. She married Ernest, her husband of 55 years, on June 21, 1952 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Fannie was an active and dedicated member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. She held numerous church offices including president of the Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, and the Padre Pio Prayer group. In recent years, she could be seen in the children's room shepherding the young ones while their parents attended services. Her pride and joy was her loving son, Rik, and grandson, David, who affectionately named her "Mima". Mima proudly adopted the precious nickname her grandson coined just for her. In her earlier years she was a professional cake decorator, always in demand for adding that special touch. She also immensely enjoyed the ceramic arts applying her creative talent to innumerable pieces. In the last ten years, Fannie unselfishly gave of herself on a weekly basis, to recite the rosary for the elderly and disabled residents of Encino House. She is survived by her husband, Ernest; her son, Rik and his wife, Lynn; and her grandson, David. She is also survived by her brother, Billy Chavez of Albuquerque and two sisters, Rose Duran of California and Sadie Mares of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joe and Richard and one sister, Carmen. A Rosary will be recited on Monday, February 4, 2008, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, February 5, 2008, 10:00 a.m., at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 833 Arizona SE. Interment will then take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. the same day. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation, 4901 Lange Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109 or to Presbyterian Kaseman Hospice Inpatient Unit, P.O. Box 26666, Albuquerque, NM 87125-6666. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE (505) 843-6333 www.frenchmortuary.com
