EVANGEL -- Effie Evangel, 85, died Wednesday, August 29, 2007. She was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, her parents, Angelo and Isodia Leonidas who emigrated from Triglia, a town on the Sea of Mamara, in Turkey. Effie graduated from the University of Alberta. She and her mother moved to Vancouver after Angelo's death. She later moved to Los Angeles. Effie re-met Chris Evangel at an Order of Ahepa convention. Chris had previously met her during WWII when he was working on the Alcan Highway for the U.S. Army. He proposed and they were married. They moved to his home in Albuquerque. Chris passed away in 1982. Effie was active in the Daughters of Penelope and St. George Greek Orthodox Church. She served in many capacities as officer, president and festival chairwoman. During these years she made many close friendships in the Albuquerque Greek community. Effie will be remembered for her force of character, hard work, the care she gave to family and friends, her ability with crafts and painting. The Trisagion will be Monday, September 3, 2007, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. NE. The Funeral will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2007, 11:00 a.m., at St George Greek Orthodox Church, 308 High St SE. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
