BLUMMER -- KATHLEEN ANN Family and friends of Kathleen Ann Blummer celebrated her life at Faith Lutheran Church in Albuquerque on August 19, 2007. Kathy passed peacefully from this life into God's arms on August 8, 2007. Kathy was born on April 17, 1945 in Iowa Falls, IA to Julia and Art Thorsbakken. She graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1963, and then attended Ellsworth Junior College for two years. In 1967 she graduated the University of Iowa with a bachelor's of art degree. Kathy met the love of her life while in college, and she married Terry Blummer from Hammond, IN in 1971. Kathy and Terry were thrilled when their daughter, Emily, was born in 1979. Tragically, Terry passed away in 1980 after a long battle with cancer. Kathy bravely took on her new role as a single parent. She and Emily moved to Albuquerque in 1982, where Kathy began working as a counselor in the Albuquerque Public Schools. Throughout her career, Kathy had a positive impact on many children, their parents and teachers as she helped them deal with educational, social and family issues. Kathy received a lung transplant in 2005 at the CU Hospital in Denver, CO. When it became clear in 2007 that her new lung was failing, Kathy talked openly about her impending death. She taught all those around her how to deal with illness and death with both courage and dignity. Throughout her illness, family and friends visited her frequently. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Vernon,; her sister, Norma; and her beloved husband, Terry. She is survived by her daughter, Emily; sister, Julie Horning; three sisters-in-law; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews in the Thorsbakken and Blummer families. Kathy talked in her last few days about the incredible power of faith and friendship, knowing that she was in God's arms as she passed from this life into the next. Contributions may be made to New Mexico Donor Services, c/o Maria Saunders, 2715 Broadbent Pkwy NE, Suite H, Albuquerque, NM, 87107.

GAETA -- Sister Mary Grace Gaeta 1922 - 2007 Felician Franciscan, Sister Mary Grace Gaeta passed away on August 25, 2007, at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Provincial House in Rio Rancho, NM. Born in San Bernardino, CA, she was the daughter of John and Altagracia (Castruita) Gaeta and in baptism was given the name Carmen. The eldest of seven children, she often took on the responsibility for their care. Her primary and secondary education years were spent in Southern California. After her high school years, Carmen worked for ten years helping to support her family, having lost her father shortly after high school. A Franciscan at heart, she became a member of the Third Order Secular of St. Francis on January 8, 1950. On September 8, 1951, Carmen entered the Felician Franciscan Congregation in Chicago, IL. At the investiture ceremonies in 1952, she was given the name Mary Grace, to which she gave special meaning during her entire life as a Felician Sister. In 1953 and 54 she served the community using her gift as a seamstress and tailor. In 1954, she began her teaching ministry which took her to CA, TX, AL and OK, at twelve different locations. With untiring patience and compassion, Sister Grace taught children from kindergarten through fifth grade, often teaching three grades in one classroom. During the 1986-87 school year at Sacred Heart School, in Pomona, CA, she also ministered to her aging mother in neighboring La Verne, CA. After thirty-four years of teaching, in 1988, Sister Grace returned to the provincial house in Rio Rancho to once again minister as a seamstress. In 1992, at the age of seventy, Sister Grace joined Sister Margaret Marie Padilla, to open the first Felician Mission in Ejido Santa Maria in Coahuila, Mexico. The harsh conditions of the area did not prevent her from working to evangelize, visit homes, promote base communities, work to establish justice for women and children and the local coal miner. She also shared her skills in sewing and assisted the women of the area with marketable hand crafts. In 1993 sister made her final return to Rio Rancho where she served as a seamstress and driver. In her spare time she worked on beautifully executed needle point and embroidery projects. She also found time to provide catechetical instruction at San Ysidro Parish in Corrales, NM until 2004, when declining health forced her to curtail her active ministries. In spite of some physical limitations, Sister Grace continued to care for flowers and the wild birds. Daily she would bring bird seed to her feathered friends on the "South Side." Whenever she was unable to feed God's creatures herself, she was sure to find a substitute for this service. This gentle and caring nature was always characteristic of the way Sister Grace lived her life. Gentle by nature, she was always kind, nourished by her deep devotion to the Blessed Mother, especially to the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She also had a very strong devotion to the Holy Family. Sister Grace maintained strong ties with her own family. Her desk top was filled with family photos, mostly of the youngest members, who always brought a smile to her face. She was and will be known for her gentle strength and quiet counsel and for forgiveness and peace making in all her relationships. Sister Grace was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Peter Gaeta. She sis survived by her brothers, John, Joe, Ray, and Jesse Gaeta and her sister, Hope Moreno. The Vesper service will take place at 4:30 p.m. at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Provincial House Chapel, 4210 Meadowlark Lane, SE, Rio Rancho, with the Wake and Rosary Services at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2007. MCADA -- Bobby Eugene McAda, formerly of Tucumcari, NM, died at the age of 75 in Niceville, FL on Monday August 27, 2007. His death was due to health complications related to pneumonia and a stroke. Bobby was born in Floydada, TX in 1932, graduated from Tucumcari High school and operated Gulf Gas Stations on Route 66 in the 1960s and early '70s. Bobby had been a resident of Florida for 22 years. He moved to Florida from New Mexico in 1985 to work with his son, Scott McAda, who owned radio stations in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Illinois. Shortly after arriving in Florida, Bobby had a serious hypertensive stroke at age 53, but fought to regain the ability to walk and talk despite overwhelming odds. Between 1986 and 1993 Bobby entertained radio listeners as "Pops the Old Geezer" along with his son, mornings on WZEP Radio Station in Defuniak Springs, FL. In daily life, Bobby's speech could be blunt. It was a characteristic that rubbed many the wrong way, but endeared him to others. When Bobby was able. he drove too fast, drank too much, partied at the drop of a hat and generally did not take care of himself. Despite the fact that he had serious health problems for the last 25 years of his life, he was a happy and entertaining person until the very end. Bobby held no religious or church affiliations and expressed frequently that he did not believe in an afterlife. He related the basics of Darwinian Evolution, as he understood them, to his son at a young age. He loved bars, drinking, strong language, old movies, and especially recollection of his vivid personal memories of his many exploits in life. Bobby will be missed by many and always remembered by even more as a "Unique Character". He is survived by his son, Scott McAda and daughter-in-law, Belinda McAda, as well as two grandchildren, Wesley McAda and William McAda. His sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Dave Scott of Roswell and his brother, Jimmy McAda, now residing in Oklahoma, also survive. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Bernice McAda of Tucumcari. Bobby chose to be an organ donor and the family was informed that others in need of living tissue would benefit from his gift of eyes, skin, and bone tissue. The National Cremation Society of Fort Walton Beach, FL has been entrusted with Bobby McAda's remains. Friends and family will have a private celebration of his life and memories at a local bar. We know he would approve by saying "All right!" if he could. The family extends special thanks to family Doctor Ken Haskin for his kind and compassionate care. Memorial donations may be made to the Meals on Wheels program of Okaloosa County Florida. Donations may be mailed to: Bridgeway Center, 137 Hospital Drive, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548, attention Senior Services.
