MAY -- Marvin Clark May, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at the age of 93. Marvin was born in Glendale, CA on November 15, 1913 to James Clark May and Mary Jane Rogers May. He moved to Albuquerque in 1931 and graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1941 with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. He received his M.S. in Municipal Engineering from Oklahoma University and completed advanced studies in Traffic Engineering at the University of California. Upon graduation from UNM, Marvin worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. In 1945 he returned to UNM as an instructor and enjoyed a career as a professor of civil engineering until his retirement in 1978. During his 33 years of teaching at the University of New Mexico, Professor May was also active in public service. He served as a member of the Albuquerque City Planning Commission, a Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Albuquerque Metropolitan Flood Control Authority and the UNM Campus Planning Committee. Professor May also served on several traffic study boards and was associated with the New Mexico Accident Study Program at UNM. As much as Marvin loved teaching, home was truly where his heart was. He met the love of his life, Virginia Minter May, on the University of New Mexico campus and they married June 21, 1942. They created a home in which family and friends were always welcome. Marvin loved the beauty of nature and chose the Pacific Northwest for several summer sabbaticals on which he took his family. In his home carpentry workshop, he created furnishings and toys and restored several antiques all of which have become family treasures. Marvin and Virginia enjoyed the symphony, day trips around New Mexico, Southwestern art and classes in local history. Marvin was a perpetual student and teacher. The City of Albuquerque is indebted to Professor May for his many years of service that helped shape our city and make it safer. His students at UNM not only learned the science of civil engineering from him, but life lessons that enriched their lives and marriages. Marvin's family is left with fond memories, wisdom and virtues that will be cherished by every member for generations to come. Professor May is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Virginia Minter May of Albuquerque; as well two daughters. Virginia May Shumate and husband. E. Chandler Shumate of San Diego, CA, and Mary May Sproul and husband, Jeff Sproul of Albuquerque; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held at a future time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
