HORACEK -- John V. Horacek passed away early Saturday morning, December 16, 2006, at his home in Grants, NM following a brief illness. Mr. Horacek was born on December 16, 1919, in Dawson, NM, to Felix Horacek and Antonia Starkovich Horacek. He was 87. Mr. John V. Horacek moved to Grants in 1956 to accept a position as city manager of Grants. He had previously been the assistant city manager for the City of Albuquerque. He served honorably in the U.S. Army, he served as the Grants municipal judge for a time and as magistrate judge for about 25 years. In addition, he was a former mayor of Grants, he served in the Grants city council, and was a county commissioner. Shortly following his retirement in 1982, he took a position (in 1984) as the St. Teresa de Avila Catholic Church accountant and served in that position until roughly one month ago. His family remembers him for his commitment to public service, love of politics and his kindness, generosity and humility, which are fruits of God's spirit. He was a member of St. Teresa de Avila Catholic Church, a faithful Catholic and follower of Jesus Christ. We will be missed by friends and family who loved him. Mr. Horacek is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty M. Horacek of the family home in Grants; three sons, Rick Horacek and his wife, Sherri of Grants; Grants City Manager, Bob Horacek, and Gerald Horacek and wife, Sally of Grants; four grandchildren, Dr. Rich Horacek and wife, Courtney of Omaha, NE, Sandy Rodgers and husband, John of Reno, NV, Alissa Horacek of Grants, and Gerald Horacek of Grants; three great-grandchildren, Eben Horacek of Omaha, NE, Arden Horacek of Omaha, NE, and Embry Horacek of Omaha, NE; Numerous nephews and nieces survive as well. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix Horacek and Antonia Starkovich Horacek; one brother, Joe Horacek; and three sisters, Agnes Tellis, Frances Bonato, and Ann Lane. The Holy Rosary Meditation Service will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at St. Teresa de Avila Catholic Church. Immediately following the Rosary, the Funeral Mass at 2 p.m. with Fr. Alberto Avella, Fr. Michael Kugler, and Fr. Jeff King officiating. Veteran's Graveside Services, Catholic Graveside Services, and interment will be at Grants Memorial Park following Mass. Grants VFW Post No. 3221 will provide the military honor guard. Pallbearers will be Gerald Horacek, Gary Atencio, Bill Snodgrass, Ron Ortiz, Jim Hanosh and Manuel Maestas. Honorary pallbearers include Bill Valentine, Bill Starkovich, George Fryberg, Richard Bonato, Robert Milosovich, Ruben Aranda, Mayor Joe Murrietta, and Sen. Joseph A. Fidel. Grants Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
