ATKINS -- Regenia (Gene) Atkins passed away on September 9, 2006 after ten years of increasing debilitation due to vascular dementia. She died one day before celebrating her 100th birthday on September 10, 2006. She was the last of the ten first cousins heralding from North Carolina and Virginia. She was born in Welch, WV to Regenia (Ray) and James Lee Beck. She graduated from Greensboro High School and studied at Northwestern University and Barnard College. She was an early member of the Denishawn Dancers located in Jacob's Pillow, MA and toured with them throughout the United States She was also an extraordinary teacher of modern dance. She moved to New Mexico in 1970 and lived in both Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. Her last address was the Casa Contenta assisted living home where she was tenderly cared for by Barbara Munley, Desi Chacon and their staff. Her third husband, Dr. Frank M. Atkins, predeceased her in death. She leaves behind her only child, Lee Atkins Desta of Gig Harbor, WA and all those who loved her so devotedly. Special thanks are offered to the Vista Care Hospice and especially aide Sofia Chavez for their care and to Mrs. Evelyn Camacho, "the daughter of her heart".
