SZALAY -- DAVID ANDREW IN MEMORIAM DAVID ANDREW SZALAY 1968 - 2006 David Andrew Szalay, beloved son, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend to so many, passed away suddenly on July 20, 2006, at his home in La Cienega, just outside of Santa Fe, NM. His 38 years were a blessing to all who knew and loved him. Born in Los Alamos, NM, David attended NMSU, lived in Los Angeles, CA, Houston, TX, (where he attended the Art Institute of Houston), Destin, FL, and New Orleans, LA. He was a gifted portrait artist, sculptor, and website designer, as well as a brave, compassionate, and generous soul - whose sense of humor, ready smile, twinkling eyes, deep spirituality and empathy had the power to comfort and uplift others, but finally could not save him from his own constant physical pain. David is survived by his bereaved parents, Jann Arrington Wolcott and Gerard Szalay; his step-parents, Dr. John Wolcott and Linda Szalay - all of Santa Fe; his brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Chanda Szalay of Los Alamos, NM; his sister and brother-in-law, Janna Szalay Bunnell and Chris Bunnell of Monument, CO; his step-brother, Dr. Ted Wolcott of San Jose, CA; his step-sister, Anne Wolcott King of Dallas, TX; his grandparents, Jack and Katherine Arrington of Las Cruces, NM, and Gizella Szalay of Denver CO; his long-time companion, Doretta O'Connor and cat, Zeke, of New Orleans; LA; his adored nieces and nephews: Kayla, Krista, and Kyle Szalay, Christopher Keene, Savanna and Michael Bunnell. The brothers of his heart include Michael Baker of Albuquerque, Sam Thompson of Destin, FL, and Dan McBride of Santa Fe. Aunts and uncles include Marge Arrington of Las Cruces, Tom and Pat Szalay of Rockwall, TX, Midge Szalay of Tucson, AZ, Judy and Jim Dvorak of Parker, CO, and Dr. Elizabeth Szalay, of Albuquerque, an orthopedic surgeon, who assisted in his back surgery, which gave him hope and several additional years of life, and Jack Edward and Pat Arrington of Las Cruces, NM. His cousins include Robert Lee Arrington, Dona Arrington Rutherford, Jack Justin and Elizabeth Arrington, Frank and Laura Szalay, Scott Miller, Chad Miller, Michael Dvorak, Loraine Dvorak-Duthie, and Brian Dvorak. His biological family and the extended family of his heart - too many to name, but they know who they are - thank all of the dear friends who have offered so much comfort and support. David's ashes will be scattered in the ocean near Destin, FL, where he spent so many joyous days kayaking in the company of wild dolphins. Because of his great love and empathy for all animals, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society 100 Caja Del Rio, Santa Fe, NM 87505. David, who is finally free of pain and resting in well-deserved peace, would ask that we all remember and take comfort in the ancient Tibetan saying: "Everyone dies, but no one is dead."
