JACKSON -- Virginia S. Jackson, 89, a resident of Albuquerque for 46 years, peacefully passed this world on Wednesday, April 26, 2006. She is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Thurman E. (Jack) Jackson; loving daughter, Terry L. Jackson and son-in-law, James W. Gustafson, all of Albuquerque; brother-in-law, Archie G. Jackson of Laguna Beach, CA; sister-in-law, Velma Taber-Estes of Lee, IL; nephews, Ronald R. Redding, Michael S. Jackson and Gary Taber; one niece, Candace J. Burrows; step-granddaughter, Jennifer F. Gustafson; two stepbrothers; and countless friends, former students, fellow educators, and nursing colleagues nation-wide. Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her adoring father, her sister, mother and stepmother. Active as a Registered Nurse for more than 40 years, Virginia served during WWII in the Army Nurse Corps as a Second Lieutenant, was Professor of Nursing at UNM in the College of Nursing where a faculty office was dedicated in her honor in January 2000, and retired from APS as a School Nurse. She authored the first Nursing Needs Study for the State of NM for the University of Albuquerque, served as President of the NM Nurses Association for two terms, was appointed to author and lobby for NM legislation for nurses (the Nurse Practice Act), and otherwise energetically championed and honorably represented the nursing profession throughout her dynamic career and into retirement. A world traveler known for her intellect, integrity, quick wit, easy smile and devotion to her family, Virginia will be dearly remembered and missed by all those whose lives she touched in a very special way. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, May 4, 2006, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. Private family interment will take place at a later date at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the UNM College of Nursing in her name.
