HEWITT -- Roland Charles Hewitt passed away at home peacefully on Friday, March 17, 2006 after a long illness. He was born October 18, 1929 to Robert Roy and Sarah Angeline (Cartwright) Hewitt in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. In 1949 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Anchorage, AK. While stationed there he met Nina Mae Meyer, and on October 21, 1950 they were married, a union that lasted until his passing. On the 29th day of September, 1954 he received his Honorable Discharge as a sergeant, shortly there after he move to Alexandria, Virginia, where he attained an Associate in Applied Science degree from the CREI Institute. He then moved his family to Albuquerque in 1957, where he began his 31 year career at Sandia Labs. Roland had a good life during which he traveled the world while in his employment. He was instrumental in the establishment of the youth hockey program that continue to this day, as well as being heavily involved in various Hockey teams in the area. He was a member of A.F. & A.M. Mesa Lodge #68 and the Scottish Rite Temple, and a very proud member of Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple. He also participated in the Pipe and Drum Band. Roland is survived by his beloved wife, Nina; a son, Russell and his three children, Ryan, Justin, and Jessica; a daughter, Linda Roline Meadows and her children, Jason, Jacob, Sarah, and Jordon; a son, Randy and wife, Monica and their children, Samantha, Nathan, and Lauren; his great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Jamie, Adam, Kayla, and Joseph; He is survived by his brothers, Robert and William Hewitt; and his sisters, Bernice Sealy, Dorothy Carey, Betty Russell, Carol Smith, and Angie Claypole, all of Canada. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends, Roland was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lawrence and Ronald Hewitt; a sister, Leone Wollison; and a grandson, Jon Mark Meadows. A visitation will be held for Roland on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors from 5 to 8 p.m.. Inurnment will be held at Sandia Memory Gardens on Friday, March 24, 2006 at 2 p.m. Memorial Services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, 6600 Zuni Rd. The family asks in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in Roland's memory to The Children's Transportation Fund, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, 6600 Zuni Rd. Albuquerque, NM 87108. The family also wished to express a special thank you to Vista Care Hospice and all their staff for their assistance.
