HICKEY -- Fr. Meldon Hickey, O.F.M. of St. Michaels, AZ died at Univeristy Hospital in Albuquerque, NM on December 7, 2005 at the age of 81. He was born in Cincinnati, OH on December 10, 1923. He pronounced his final vows with the Franciscans on August 16, 1946 in Detroit, MI and was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1951 in Oldenburg, IN. His entire priestly ministry was spent in the missions and parishes of the Southwest. Fr. Meldon was appointed by Rome the first provincial of the newly formed Our Lady of Guadalupe Franciscan Province in January, 1985. At the time of his death he was associate pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Ft. Defiance, AZ and the parish at St. Michaels Mission, AZ and was active in the Cursillo movement for the Diocese of Gallup, NM. Fr. Meldon is survived by a sister, Margaret Tonnies of Cincinnati, OH and a brother, John Hickey of St. Bernard, OH. Reception of the body, Vespers service and Visitation will take place on Monday evening, December 12, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup, NM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday morning, December 13, 2005 at Sacred Heart Cathedral with burial following in Hillcrest Cemetery, Gallup, NM. Gabaldon Mortuary, 1000 Old Coors Dr. SW, Albuquerque, NM serving the Franciscan Family.
