SHAVER -- Paul A. Shaver, 95, a life-long resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, December 7, 2005. He is survived by his sons, John Shaver and wife, Joy of Spring Grove, PA, William (Bill) Shaver of Albuquerque; daughters, Betty Ann Rebarchik and husband, Frank of Albuquerque, Kathy Swallows of Honolulu, HI, and Judy Shaver of Arvada, CO; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Sharon Shaver of Edgewood, NM; and numerous friends. Paul was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Betty Shaver in January, 1998; son, Wesley Shaver; and four brothers and sisters. He was born on July 11, 1910 in Salisbury, NC. Paul served in the United States Army from June, 1929 to August, 1930. He started working for the Albuquerque Police Department in 1935 as a patrolman on a beat, at the very bottom. Paul started the fingerprint bureau for APD, drawing from his training in the Army. He also started the Chaplaincy Program, School Crossing Guard Program and the F.O.P Boy's Camp, among others. Paul worked his way up in the police department, rising to the highest rank of Chief of Police. He was the only Police Chief who had to take a test to become Chief. Chief Shaver served as Police Chief from 1948 to 1971, serving the longest time as Chief in Albuquerque. He was very honest and of the highest integrity and was greatly respected not only by the policemen he worked with but also the citizens of Albuquerque. Paul was a member of John XXIII Catholic Community. He was a beloved father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE Sunday, December 11, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. to the Rosary. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. by Deacon Alex Trujillo. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at John XXIII Catholic Community, 4831 Tramway Ridge NE, Monday, December 12, 2005, 11:00 a.m., Father Arkad Biczak, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Police Athletic League, 5800 Jefferson NE, Albuquerque, or to Vista Care Hospice, 5201 Venice Ave. NE, Suite A & B, Albuquerque, 87113.
