JOHNSTON -- George H. Johnston, Colonel, USAF, Retired, 86, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque and Red River, NM, passed away April 19, 2005 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Betty Brunson Johnston; his brother, Wallace W. Johnston, Colonel USAF, Retired, and his wife, Joan, of Tucson, AZ; his son, Dr. George Gilbert Johnston and wife, Dr. Barbara Levy, of Federal Way, WA; daughter, Ann Weil and husband, Harry, of Albuquerque, NM; daughter-in-law, Jane Johnston of Santa Monica, CA; five grandchildren, Shannon and Lilly Beth Johnston, Marita and Harrison Weil, and Samantha Johnston. Colonel Johnston graduated from the University of New Mexico with a B.A. degree in 1941 and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served with the 20th Air Force as a B-29 Aircraft Commander and Executive Officer in the Mariana Islands in World War II; the Air Weather Service and Strategic Air Command during and after the Korean War, and with Headquarters Pacific Air Forces as Director of Operations and Training during the Vietnam War. He graduated from the United States National War College. He retired from the Air Force at the Flight Test Center, Edwards AFB, CA in 1971, with a Legion of Merit Award for 30 consecutive years of outstanding and meritorious service. He was active with the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Santa Fe and the Shrine Temple, Ballut Abyad Shrine, and the Royal Order of Jesters. Cremation has taken place. Following his wishes there will be no funeral or memorial services held, except by close members of his family, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ballut Abyad Crippled Children's Transportation Fund, 6600 Zuni SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, or to VistaCare Hospice, 8804-C Washington NE, Albuquerque, NM 87113.
