MAISH -- Alexander Bourke Maish, 49, died Friday, March 11, 2005. He is survived by his son, Benjamin; his parents, Dr. Alexander M. and Elizabeth Maish of Arlington, VA; and his sister, Darby Maish Woolley of Austin, TX. Alex was preceded in death by his twin brother, Fred, of Albuquerque. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast, community leader, and outstanding engineer. Valedictorian of his high school, he graduated from Princeton University and earned a Masters Degree at the University of Virginia. Alex was employed at Sandia National Laboratories for 25 years in the field of photovoltaics where he pioneered systems for solar concentrator arrays, and in robotics where he worked until his death. He struggled his entire life with cystic fibrosis, spending great amounts of time mentoring young people with the disease, writing articles in CF journals, and serving as president of the Cystic Fibrosis Roundtable. In spite of the debilitating effects of the disease, Alex managed to backpack, ski, sail, and travel. His favorite haunts were the canyons of southeastern Utah, where he spent many a vacation backpacking, and the British Virgin Islands, where he captained large sailboats. His love of adventure took him as far as the Orient, to Latin America, and to Europe many times. Memorial Services celebrating Alex's life will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at 5:00 p.m., at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 425 University Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 4004 Carlisle Blvd. NE, 87107. French Mortuary 1111 University Blvd. NE 843-6333
