STAEHLIN -- Alfred Carl Staehlin, 82, passed away among family at the Heart Institute of New Mexico on Saturday evening, August 28, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Dorthella Staehlin; sons, Alan Staehlin of Albuquerque and David Staehlin of Friday Harbor, WA; sister, Marlene Mathis and husband, David; stepchildren, Crest Merrill, Rockney Merrill, Tyla Merrill and Melanie Wycloff, whom all reside near Eagar, AZ; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2004 at the Amity Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in Eagar, AZ. A public viewing will be held the preceding day from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Owen's Funeral Home in Eagar. Al was born and raised in Albuquerque, attended Albuquerque High School and was a part of Albuquerque Plumbing and Heating, established by his grandfather, August Staehlin, in the late 1800s. During high school Al served as president of the ski club-skiing a passion only surpassed by his love of dancing. Al signed up for military service in August of 1942 and proudly served his country during WWII, operating a radio navigation beacon located on Baffin Island in the Artic which provided a homing signal for troop and supply planes making the great circle navigation route to/from Europe in preparation of the invasion of Normandy. After the war, Al went on to become a NM State plumbing inspector and was responsible for ensuring code compliance and for investigating natural gas asphyxiation cases for the next 20 years. After retiring from the state, Al became supervisor of plumbing facilities maintenance at the University of New Mexico for an additional 15 years. Al was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Al moved to Eagar, AZ in 1997 with his wife, Dot where he has since resided. In closing, the family would like to acknowledge and say thank you to the staff of the Heart Institute of New Mexico for the caring, compassion and kindness they provided throughout this most difficult time.
