MCCULLOUGH -- Vera Y. McCullough, 87, passed away on Friday, August 6, 2004, in Albuquerque. She is survived by her daughter, Martha McCullough Wolf; sons, J.F. "Flint" McCullough III and wife, Christina, and Tom McCullough and wife, Vickie, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Tammy Brown, Randy Burk, J. F. McCullough IV, Melissa R. Cox, Dustin S. McCullough, S. Brooke McCullough, Cheyanne S. McCullough, Kelly L. Barton and Sian M. McCullough; great grandchildren, Quirin T. McCullough, Victoria R. Barton, Justin W. Burk, Logan Cox, Greta G. Burk and Keegan Cox; niece, Martha Vay Durrett, of Minden, LA. Born in Bernice, LA October 24, 1916, to William Thomas and Martha Jane McCall Yocom, she was raised in Camden, Arkansas and attended business college in Shreveport, LA, where she met her future husband, J. Fred McCullough, Jr. They married on April 1, 1939 and traveled together throughout the South while Fred continued his career in sales. Settling in Jacksonville, TX, where Fred became a partner with his father in the 7-Up Bottling Plant, they planned to spend their lives there surrounded by family and friends. The serious illness of their middle child, J. Fred, III, necessitated a move to a drier climate, and Albuquerque became their new home, an area they quickly learned to love. Vera, known far and wide for her Southern Hospitality and baking skills, simply never met a stranger. Everyone who came to her door was offered a cup of coffee and more, and she was always gracious and generous with family, friends and anyone she met along the way. To her, rudeness was a major flaw, and graciousness to all was her lifelong style. In addition to being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to her growing family, she had a successful career as an executive administrator, and spent the last 15 years of her career at Sandia Corp., where she worked with a group of nuclear scientists, her "guys," who depended on her strong organizational skills to keep the place going. After losing her husband to illness in 1974, she spent her many remaining years with her family as the center of her life. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and later, Hoffmantown Baptist Church. Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5800 Lomas NE, 87110. French Mortuary, Inc. 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400
