He was born March 11, 1919 near Steubenville, Ohio, the sixth of seven children born to Loren Joseph Richards and Margaret Grace (Jackman) Richards. His first eight years of schooling were in a one-room schoolhouse in Pleasant Hill, Ohio. He walked five miles to attend Steubenville High School, graduating in 1937 with a major in mechanical arts, having a talent for drawing. He grew up in a farming family and was active in the Presbyterian Church and the National Grange. His family had their first telephone in 1923 and the home received electricity in 1935. In 1941, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps, attended basic training at Kelly Field in San Antonio, then teletype operator training at Luke Field, near Phoenix. In May 1942, he was assigned to Roswell Air Field. While assigned to Roswell, he met Billie Scoggin, and they married on June 15, 1943 which was the wedding anniversary of both of their parents. In 1945 during WWII, he served on the island of Luzon in the Philippine Islands. After the war, he returned home, and was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps. Beginning in 1946, while he studied pre-engineering at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, he worked at a lumber yard and drew house plans. In 1948, he transferred to UNM in Albuquerque and studied architecture. While in school, he worked drawing house plans, and in a sheet metal shop. He received his BA in Architectural Engineering from UNM in 1951, as one of 13 students in the first class to receive that degree. He received his Engineering License in 1955, and was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, and an associate member of the American Institute of Architects. After graduation, he first worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, then for some of the leading architects in Albuquerque, and did the structural design of many buildings throughout the state. Later he worked as a Plans Examiner for the City of Albuquerque Building Department, checking plans for mechanical, plumbing, and electrical code compliance. Because of his expertise, he was often called on to assist other plans examiners when structural engineering questions arose. He retired in 1986. He was a member of The Masonic Lodge, receiving the 32nd degree of masonry, and was a member of the Shrine. He served as Cub Master, Scout Master and Neighborhood Commissioner with the Boy Scouts of America.
