TARLETON -- Thomas "Tom" Tarleton passed away peacefully at home in Taos, NM on October 4, 2003. He was born in Elizabethtown, Territory of New Mexico, on October 14, 1902. He was a lifetime resident and rancher in northern New Mexico. After serving in the Army Mounted Engineers, he went to mechanics school in Kansas City. He worked for the Fred Harvey Company and the Park Service at the Grand Canyon, where he met his beloved wife, Toni. When he returned to Taos in 1930 he opened Tarleton Motor Company, which he ran with his father until he started ranching full time in the late 1940s. He was a charter member and fire chief of the Taos Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Toni, in 1994. Mr. Tarleton is survived by sons, Thomas A. Tarleton and wife, Mary Lou of Taos and G. Michael Tarleton and wife, Anne of Taos; daughter, Nancy T. Feight of Albuquerque; sister, Marion T. Fox of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kathleen Lerner and husband, Frank of Albuquerque, Thomas J. Tarleton and Michelle Jaschke of Santa Fe, Laura Feight, Lawrence L. Feight and wife, Anita, Christy Tarleton, and Tracy Tarleton, all of Albuquerque; and great-grandchildren, Michael Lerner of Las Cruces, Sarah Lerner, Amanda Griego, and Leslie Feight, all of Albuquerque, and Katja Tarleton of Santa Fe. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Taos. Pallbearers are John Brenner, John Brooks, Lawrence L. Feight, Eric Fox, Scott Haugland, Frank Lerner, and Thomas J. Tarleton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Taos Hospice, 630 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Taos 87571 or New Mexico Talking Book Library, 1209 Camino Carlos Rey, Santa Fe 87505.
