Swallow -- James G. Swallow Sr., 80, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 14 years, and a longtime resident of Albuquerque before that, passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 1999 after a long battle with cancer. Raised in Middle Village, New York, attended St. Margarets Elementary, and Bishop McGloughlin High School. He served in the US Military during WWII. He played trombone in Fort Custer Army Band. After an honorable discharge, he returned to play with the big bands of the 40's, where he met and married his wife, Edna. He worked with Les Egart, Tony Pastor, Art Mooney, Mitchell Aires and Skitch Henderson to name a few. After raising four children in Hicksville, New York, moved to New Mexico in 1971, bought Lucky's Cafe and Donut Shop. Retired in Rio Rancho in 1985. James was active at the Meadowlark Senior Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Elmer Swallow; and granddaughter, Lisa ann Swallow. James is survived by his wife of 55 years, Edna; sons, James Jr. and wife, Anne of Alameda, CA, Judson of Alameda, CA; daughters, Judith Wilhelm and husband, Robert of E. Northport, NY, Joy Swallow of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Renee Moore of Alameda, CA, Jeanette Tivis of Erie, PA, Brian, Matthew and Kenneth Wilhelm of E. Northport, NY, Alyssa Ann and Amber Rose of Washington; two great-grandchildren, Justin Tivis and Shelby Moore. The service for James will be held on Monday, August 9, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. Interment will be at the National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. in Santa Fe, NM. Arrangements by Vista Verde Mortuary.
