Gaines -- Garrett Edward (G.E.) Gaines, known to his friends as"Pete" was born October 2, 1924 in Lamesa, Texas to Otis"Bud" and Irene Gaines. He is survived by his wife, Faye Gaines; son, Gary Gaines; and daughter, Letha and husband, Frank Redlich. Grandchildren, Victoria Gaines serving in the USAF in Littlerock, AR, Trey Gaines of Garland, TX, Shawn Price and Roxanne of Yuma, AZ, Tami Redlich of Farley; and great-grandson, Cody Gaines of Garland. He is also survived by a sister, Becky Sauble; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Pete was preceded in death by his father, mother and two brothers (Billy and Robert). He lived his entire live on his beloved ranch at the Point of Rock. Pete attended Wheatland school and graduated from the Farley School. Pete proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II as a tanker. He married Olive Faye Griffeth of Springer, December 23, 1944 and as a partner with his wife and mother operated the ranch until his death. Pete served as a Colfax County Commissioner for 8 years. During his term the Colfax County Hospital was built. He was Colfax County Farm Bureau President for a number of years, a member of VFW, American Legion and the Santa Fe Trail Association. He was instrumental in obtaining telephone, television and a rural fire department in the Farley area. He opened up his home and heart to people from around the world and shared his knowledge and love of New Mexico history and geology and stories of his life. Pete was a kind and gentle man who dearly loved his family, friends and fellowship with God everyday as he worked his ranch. Memorial Services will be held at his Point of Rocks ranch Wednesday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Ken Goode officiating. Honorary Pallbearers are Shawn Price, Trey Gaines, Oscar Berlier, Leo McCarty, Charles Morehart, Jim Spears, Jerry Stevens and Willie Wise. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of their choice. Direct Services, 343-8008, in charge or arrangements.Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well...
