Shelden -- Alvah Elijah Shelden, 86, died Friday, April 16, 1999 in Albuquerque. He is survived by his beloved second wife, Winifred Clayton Shelden, who was a tender, constant, and loving presence in his later years; sons, Thomas Alvah Shelden and wife, Sidney of Denver, CO and Dan Floyd Shelden and wife, Katherine (Kitty) of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Robert Scott Shelden of Denver, CO, Maura Elizabeth Shelden of Cerrillos, NM, Cara Marie (Shelden) Witkay and husband, Doug of Aurora, CO, and Amanda Danielle Shelden of Seattle, WA; sister, Peggy Miller and husband, Norm of Bend, OR; and friend and sister-in-law, Kathryn Hobbs of Albuquerque. Mr. Shelden was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Marie (Hill) Shelden in 1989; son, John Delbert Shelden; brothers, Chet Jr. and Tom Shelden; and sisters, Francis Anderson and Mary Torrence. Mr. Shelden graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, Class of 1931. He returned to El Dorado and married Grace Marie (Hill) Shelden in 1935. In 1940, he accepted a position with the Civil Service in Baltimore, MD with stops in Chicago and Denver. After moving the Shelden family to Albuquerque in 1943 with young son, Tom, the family grew to include sons, John, born October 19, 1943 and Dan, born July 28, 1945. Mr. Shelden was District Manager for the Railroad Retirement Board, retiring in 1972 after 32 years of government service. Additionally, Mr. Shelden played the trombone with the Albuquerque Symphony and in many big dance bands at venues now long gone such as the La Loma Ballroom, The Alvarado, and The Franciscan. Mr. Shelden's love and talent to music is just part of the great legacy that he leaves behind for his loved ones. It was his hard work for, and dedication to his family, that we treasure most. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 19, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Pallbearers will be Tom, Dan, and Robert Shelden, Sim Cook, Bill Barry, Tom Cour, and Sherm Rabideau. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the NM Alzheimer's Association, 1300 San Pedro NE, Suite 205, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
