January -- Bessie Diana Clark January, 88, died Friday, December 31, 1999 at Sioux Center Community Hospital in Sioux Center, IA, following a four month illness. Betty was born November 24, 1911 in Helena, AR and was raised in Derry, New Hampshire. She graduated from Radcliffe College, Cambridge, MA in 1933 and became a school teacher. In 1936, she married Dr. H. Linton January, a cardiologist and one of the founding doctors of the Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque. Following his death in 1960, Betty managed the dairy farm in Colchester, VT, where the family had moved two years earlier. She retired to Sioux Center, IA in 1976 and became a volunteer with the Foster Grandparent Program at River Valley School in Rock Valley, IA. Betty worked with handicapped children on a daily basis for 23 years and represented the state of Iowa at the 20th Anniversary of the Foster Grandparent Program at the White House in 1985. Betty is survived by a sister, Martha Clark Wenk of New Jersey; and by four children, Nancy J. Hodgson of Beresford, SD, an archeologist at the University of South Dakota, Richard L. January of Sioux Center, IA, a computer software consultant, Susan Carol Pavelko of Wenatchee, WA, a fruit tree research chemist, and Dr. Katherine January of Santa Fe, a clinical psychologist at St. Vincent Hospital. Betty is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and by her nieces and nephews and their families in Albuquerque, Jan Bennett, Mary Wilkening, Angus Macpherson and Richard Macpherson.
