Bassett -- George L. Bassett, 83, a lifelong resident of Edgewood, died Sunday, August 27, 2000. He is survived by his sisters, Mary Cooper of Albuquerque, Linnie Malott of San Dimas, CA, and Eunice King of Amarillo; brother, Carl Bassett of Edgewood; and 15 nieces and nephews. George was born October 1, 1916 in what was then known as Venus, NM, but was later renamed Edgewood. His parents, William Oscar and Clara May Bassett homesteaded their land in 1912. George completed his formal education at Venus Number One School. He then enrolled in a technical program in California, where he specialized in welding and mechanical work. When he returned to Edgewood, George started a welding shop. Through the years, he acquired extensive land holdings and he was engaged in ranching and farming for over 55 years. In 1991, Mr. Bassett was awarded a certificate of recognition for his many years of service with the Edgewood Soil and Water Conservation District. He operated much of the equipment that built numerous earthen dams throughout the Estancia Valley. In later years, he developed several residential sub-divisions. Mr. Bassett was a WWII veteran in the Army Air Force and he was a longtime member of the American Legion in Moriarty. Services will be held Thursday, August 31, 2000, 10:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Edgewood, with Pastor Richard Crow officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Valley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Loran Hill, Paul Switzer, William (Buddy) Dunn, Carl R. Williams, Eugene Bassett and Glen Bassett. French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
