Brown -- Surrounded by his family, Theodore R. Brown, 94, passed away peacefully as he slept August 27 at 4:00 a.m. At his bedside was his beloved wife, Ruth, his sons James Brown, Ted F. Brown, Charles F. Brown all of Albuquerque and his daughter Ellie Rucker of Albuquerque and Austin, Texas, his sister Hazel Brown, adopted family member Mildred Benton, and brother Clarence"Brownie" of Pueblo, Colo. Preceding him in death were, his brothers Carroll of Colorado Springs and, Fay of Fresno, Calif., and his sisters Myrtle T. and Ruth K. Brown. A resident of Albuquerque for 80 years, Ted was born in Waubaunsee, Kansas August 31, 1906 to Lyon James Brown and Mary Letty McAlister. Ted's family left Kansas in a covered wagon, headed for the Land of Enchantment. His father opened a second hand store on Gold Avenue. At age 14 Ted took his first job in Albuquerque, delivering telegrams on a bicycle. He built New Mexico's largest highway construction company, Brown Construction Company. His orange colored equipment built much of New Mexico's Interstate highway system. He broke new ground by beginning the first employee profit sharing plan in NM construction industry. During WWII he built airports, bunkers, towers, and runways for the domestic war effort. At one point he was building one airfield every 90 days. He was selected to build the top secret project at Trinity Site where the first Atomic bomb was exploded. Ted had a special interest for the underprivileged, the underdog, and those who couldn't help themselves. He supported the Navajo Indians financially, spiritually and medically at a time when few people had even heard of a Navajo, much less a Hogan. He supported Albuquerque Rescue Mission, as well as missions in Guatemala, Mexico, India and Africa. He was a founding member of Albuquerque's Grace Church, President of Associated Contractors of New Mexico, and a founding director of Mountain States Mutual Casualty Co. Services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., at Hoffmantown Baptist Church, 8888 Harper NE, with Pastor Ken Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Pallbearers will be Eldon Banks, Charles Bennett, Melvin Fitzgerald, Bynard Fox, Jim Rightley, and C.D. Thurston. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
