Kolling -- Esther June Shaw Kolling, of Socorro and former resident of Winfield, KS, died Wednesday, January 5, 2000, at Socorro General Hospital. Esther was born November 19, 1925 in Wichita, KS to David Harvey and Bernice Ruth Welch Shaw. She was educated in Wichita Public Schools and graduated in 1947 from Friends University with her Bachelors degree. In 1970, she earned her Masters in Art Education from the University of Colorado. In 1948, she married Orland William Kolling at University Friends Church in Wichita, KS. During the first years of marriage, Esther worked as a medical technologist in St. Louis. After earning her art degree, Esther taught classes through the Wichita Weaving Guild in the Winfield Community and at Southwestern College. She showed award-winning work at Midwest Weavers Conference, Kansas Designer Craftsmen, War Eagle Arts and Crafts Fair. A third-generation Quaker, the Religious Society of Friends continued to be an important spiritual foundation throughout Esther's life. She sang in the choir at the University Friends Church in Wichita and when she relocated to St. Louis, both she and Orland became active members of the St. Louis Monthly Meeting. Upon moving to Winfield, KS in 1959, they retained their ties with St. Louis Friends, as non-resident members. They moved to Socorro in 1989 and Esther became active in her Quaker community. In Socorro, she regularly sang in performances of the Las Cantatas. Her strong, clear voice will be missed. She was preceded in death by Orland, her husband of 43 years. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Buckley and Deborah Richards of Albuquerque and Annette Weaver of Columbia, MO; grandchildren, Manessa and Clayton Weaver; and loyal friend, Milton Kashner. Quaker Memorial services will be under the care of Socorro Friends Worship Group on Sunday, January 23, 10:00 a.m., at the New Mexico Tech Library (Room 212) in Socorro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Samaritan Village, 1203 Highway 60, Socorro, NM 87801 or the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, P.O. Box 340, San Antonio, NM 87832.
