Kohlhaas -- Leona R. Kohlhaas, 94, died Sunday, January 13, 2002 at her home. Born on June 24, 1907 to a pioneer family in Gallup, Territory of New Mexico, she graduated from high school at the age of fourteen. After attending business school for a year and working for another year, she enrolled at the University of New Mexico from which she graduated in 1928. While at the University, Leona was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity. Following her graduation she worked as the secretary to the president of the University, Dr. James F. Zimmerman, until her marriage to Lewis O. Kohlhaas, which took place in the president's home on May 1, 1933. Leona was active in Church Women United and served as a member of the Albuquerque Public Library Advisory Board. She was a charter member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis in 1987 and her daughter, Virginia K. Gallagher in 1989. She is survived by her son, Lt. Col. U.S.A.F., (Ret.), Richard L. Kohlhaas and his wife, Barbara of Colorado Springs, Colorado; her daughter, Marilyn K. Shannon and her husband, Del of Kettering, Ohio; her son, Dr. Charles A. Kohlhaas and his wife, Judith of El Paso, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday, 10:00 a.m., at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, 211 Jefferson NE, with Reverend Harold T. Nilsson and Reverend George A. West officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lewis O. and Leona R. Kohlhaas Endowment Fund at the Albuquerque Community Foundation, P.O.
