Onstott -- J.W. (Wayne) Onstott, age 68, of Portales, NM died Thursday morning, January 31, 2002 at the Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales. He was born February 18, 1933 in Portales, to the home of Juanita and Barto Onstott. Mr. Onstott lived in Portales as a boy. While in Jr. high school, he played football. He moved to Floyd, NM as a teenager. In 1951, he began working for what was then known as Mountain Bell Telephone. Later that same year, on October 13 in Portales, he married Orene Barbee. Mr. Onstott worked for the telephone company for 31-1/2 years, retiring in 1983. During those years he was a Supervisor in the Raton and the Albuquerque offices, as well as in other locations. Following his retirement from the phone co., he and his wife purchased the College Cleaners in Portales. In 1985, he became a Realtor, and in 1988 he earned his broker's license. He had been retired since 1998 due to his failing health. He kept his interest in sports all of his life, and for many years pitched on a fast pitch softball team. On January 21, 1995 he was inducted into the Softball Association Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially loved horses and riding all of his life. Mr. Onstott obeyed the Gospel on March 4, 1996 and was a faithful member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ in Portales. He is survived by his wife, Orene of their home; two sons, Garry Onstott and his wife, Kathleen of Santa Fe, and Dolye Onstott and his wife, Cindi of Portales; five grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Juanita Onstott of Portales; a sister, Gail Essary of Alamogordo, NM; and numerous other family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Barto Onstott; a brother, Tommy Lee Onstott; and by a grandson, Greg Onstott. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2002 at the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ in Portales. David Bennett, minister for the church will officiate. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Marshall Durham, Gene Weems, Ken Bedinger, Joe Apace, Bill Essary and Randy Burnett. His former softball team members will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
