Devries -- Ralph P. DeVries, passed away the morning of March 27, 2002. Born in Albany, NY Nov. 6, 1921, he was a graduate of Renssalear Polytechnic Institute, where he received a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps, and spent most of his three years of service on the island of Guam. After the war, he worked for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Co. and Owens Corning Fiberglass Co., conducting research in high temperature metals. In 1965, he became Technical Director for Firth Sterling Co. in Pittsburgh, PA, directing R&D operations. In 1970, Mr. DeVries changed careers and became Associate Director of Kendal at Longwood in Kennett Square, PA, a non-profit Quaker-run community for the elderly. Kendal became a prototype for high quality residential health care for older persons, receiving many awards for outstanding service in the health care field. In 1995, Mr. DeVries and his wife moved to Albuquerque, wishing to retire in the Southwest. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; three children; and five grandchildren. His son, David, resides in Camp Hill, PA; Douglas and Kristine, live in Boulder, CO. Also surviving him are three step-children, all living in the San Francisco area: Jennifer Omholt, Karen Omholt, and Clark Omholt; and four step-grandchildren. Mr. DeVries was an active member of the First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque. A Memorial Service will be held there on Tuesday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Parkinson's Disease Association will be greatly appreciated.
