Young -- Phillip Samuel Young died in his home with his family near him on Tuesday, March 26, 2002. He died of pulmonary fibrosis at the age of 83. He was born in Afton, Iowa on November 4, 1918. As a child he attended school in a one room school house, and later graduated from Afton High School. He attended the University of Iowa for several semesters before returning home to the farm with his father. He married Iris Tyler of Afton in 1942. They made their home alternately in Iowa and Albuquerque until they settled in New Mexico in 1954. Phil was a gifted gardener, and carried his ambitions to the very end, evidenced by his desire to plant a garden this spring. Just last year he sold a bumper crop of organically grown tomatoes at the Growers Market at the Fire Station in the Village of Los Ranchos, on Rio Grande Boulevard. He managed the LDS welfare farm in Grants, NM from 1973 to 1976. He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served in many leadership positions over the years. He leaves many friends from the LDS Church. His career in Engineering at Sandia Labs spanned more than two decades. Phil retired in 1982 so he and his wife, Iris, could return to Iowa to help his mother, Ethel Young farm her land and care for her until her death in 1986. He has devoted himself to countless genealogical endeavors, including volunteer work at the Genealogical Library on Haines Ave., NE. His main joy in life was his wife, children and grandchildren. Even at the very end, he expressed appreciation and happiness for them as individuals who had found joy and fulfillment in their own lives."Gramps" will be remembered with love by the following family members, brother, John (Lucille) Young; and sister, Pauline (Lynn) Parrott all of Iowa; children, Mark Lyle Young (Joylene Bailey Young) of Heidelberg, Germany; and their four children, Amanda Mefford, Lyle Young, Lindsey Young and Emily Young; Brooke Young Chancellor (George) of Bozeman, Montana; and their daughters, Summer Davidson and Heather Froggit; Devon Young Frost (Greg) of Albuquerque; and their sons, Greg Frost Jr. and Derek Swofford; and Jaynan Young Chancellor (Russ) of Logan, Utah; and their two sons, Hyrum and Ford Chancellor. Phil was preceded in death by both parents. Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 29, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1100 Montano Blvd. NW. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. French Mortuary 7121 Wyoming Blvd.
