Heltman -- Rollie V. Heltman, a resident of Santa Fe, NM, passed away March 26, 2002. He was born August 28, 1911 in North Platte, Nebraska to Beaulah Wilson and Charles T. Heltman. Mr. Heltman grew up in Colorado. He attended Colorado State at Greeley. He received his BA and MA degrees from the University of NM. Heltman was a charter member at the New Mexico Instrumental Music Directors Association. This organization was the predecessor of the present New Mexico Music Educators Association of which he was the first president in 1942. He served as the Secretary Treasure and the Executive Secretary from 1957-1993. Mr. Heltman's music teaching career began in Cimarron, NM, as the band and orchestra director. Other music programs he directed were in Belen, NM, La Junta, CO and Los Alamos, NM. In 1966 he joined the State Department of Education as a Music Educator and Fine Arts Specialist. He retired from this position in 1980. He influenced many young people to pursue careers as music educators or performers. He was a life long member of the Music Educators National Association and the National Education Association. He was a member of the Masons and a Shriner. He was also a member of the Holy Faith Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife, Harriet; son, William and friend, Elizabeth Hoffman, son, Greg and wife, Elaine; daughter, Celia Ann and husband, Roger of Vienna, Virginia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Taylor of Englewood, CO, and Joanne Hale of Lubbock, TX; and one brother, Charles Heltman of Ferriday, Louisiana. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Rosario Cemetery. A reception will be held after the service. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorials may be made to the New Mexico Music Educators Association, 304 W. Christopher, Clovis, NM 88101. Rollie V. Heltman Memorial Scholarship Fund.
