Wilson -- Dr. Howard L. Wilson passed away Sunday, April 14, 2002 following heart surgery. He was deeply loved and respected by his family, friends and generations of patients he cared for over the past 47 years in the Los Alamos community. Howard was born to Norman and Florence Wilson on July 6, 1924 in Belleville, New Jersey. He attended Columbia College in NYC, NY on an academic scholarship and graduated with an M.D. degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in June of 1947. He completed his post-graduate training at Lancaster General Hospital, Lancaster, PA, Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, PA and Bellevue Hospital in New York. He served on the faculty of New York University, College of Medicine as instructor in Pediatrics from 1951-53. He volunteered for active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve in December 1942 as apprentice Seaman and served during WWII as a Lieutenant, M.C., USNR during the Korean War. He retired form the US Naval Reserve in 1967. In 1949, he married Dorothy Barteau of Scarsdale, New York and together they moved to Billings, Montana where he practiced Pediatrics at Billings Clinic from 1953-55. In August 1955, Dr. Wilson founded The Children's Clinic in Los Alamos, NM with the late Dr. David B. Post and served as Chief of Staff, Chief of Pediatrics and Member of the Hospital Board all at the Los Alamos Medical Center. He was a member of the Los Alamos County Medical Society, New Mexico Medical Society, New Mexico Pediatrics Society, Diplomate American Board of Pediatrics and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He retired from full-time practice of Pediatrics in June 1993, but continued part-time at the Children's Clinic until last week. He is survived by his companion, Marilyn Thayer; his sister, Doris Cole and husband, Manley of Pland, California; Dorothy B. Wilson of Los Alamos; six children, Janet Cordova of Santa Fe, Barbara Schwan and husband, Robert of Venice, CA, Steven B. Wilson of Santa Fe, Dana vanWestrienen and husband, Dirk of Corrales, NM, Kimberly Cunnington and husband, David of Albuquerque, NM, Dale Dunn and husband, Stephen of Key West, FL; and 12 grandchildren, Clay and Chad Cordova, Kyle Schwan, Rachael, Jesse, Adam and Nile vanWestrienen, Galen, Luke and Dylan Cunnington, and Natalie and Ava Dunn. Services will be held at the United Church of Los Alamos on Thursday, April 18, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. Internment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Wilson requested donations be sent to the Columbia College Fund, 100 Hamilton Hall, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027. Father, doctor, brother, friend we will miss you.
