Hill -- Dr. Hamlin L. Hill, died in Los Alamos, New Mexico, on July 16, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Arlette; siblings, June and J.D. Roberts, and William J. Hill; children, Cynthia and Craig Pence, Scott and Robin Hill, Sondra Hill, Guillermo Lacona, William C. and Wendy Hill; and grandchildren, Joshua Hill, Jeremy Hill, Erik Altherr, Charles Pence, Kyle Altherr, Russell Hill, Daniel Altherr, and Lindsay Hill. Dr. Hill was born in Houston, Texas on November 7, 1931. He received a BA from the University of Houston, an MA from the University of Texas, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His academic career spanned thirty-three years at the University of New Mexico, the University of Wyoming, the University of Chicago, and Texas A & M University. He chaired the University of New Mexico English Department from 1978 to 1986 and headed the Department of English at Texas A& M University from 1986 to 1989. At retirement, he held the Ralph R. Thomas Professorship of English, and a distinguished professorship of Liberal Arts at Texas A & M. His publications include: America's Humor from Poor Richard to Doonesbury, Mark Twain: God's Fool and numerous other books and scholarly articles. He lectured and taught all over the world. A memorial service is scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on July 27, 2002, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in College Station, Texas. In lieu of flowers his family has requested memorials be directed to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Building Fund, 906 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas, 77840.
