Groman -- Robert Charles"Bob" Groman, 80, a resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, July 25, 2002. Mr. Groman was born September 18, 1921 in Las Vegas, NM. He is survived by his daughter, Mariann Haack and son-in-law, Fred of Albuquerque; and son, Robert F. Groman; daughter-in-law, Laurie; and grandchildren, Jacob and Elizabeth Groman, all currently of Amarillo, TX. In addition, he is survived by a wonderful group of in-laws in and around San Angelo, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife, Letris"Lee" Groman, who passed away in 1991 in San Angelo; by parents, Frederick Charles"Fritz" Groman and Eunice Groman Myers; brother, William; and sister, Margaret. Bob spent many years with his grandparents, Tecumseh Columbus"T. C." and Laura May"Mamie" Shaeffer in Lander, WY. His grandparents provided the love and family life Bob and his brother and sister needed during that phase of their lives. In Lander, he learned how to hunt and fish, and grew to appreciate and love the beauty of nature. He attended schools in Las Vegas, NM; Bell, CA; Lander; and Dodge City, KS. At Dodge City High School Bob lettered in basketball and track. He was offered a basketball scholarship at the University of Kansas, but instead came to Albuquerque in 1939 when his father, a civil engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad, was transferred here from Dodge City. He attended the University of New Mexico where he again lettered in both basketball and track. World War II interrupted his college studies as it did for so many others. He served overseas with the 309th Troop Carrier Squadron, a division of the 315th Troop Carrier Group, in England, France, and later in Brazil. Following the war, Bob returned to UNM where he received his B. A. and M. S. degrees. He taught school for several years before being accepted into the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He became a Special Agent in 1951 and served in Washington, D.C., Omaha, NE, Des Moines, IA, and Detroit, MI. After leaving the FBI he returned to Albuquerque and went to work for ACF Industries in 1955. Later Bob worked as a salesman for Mossman-Gladden Homes; as a teacher at Esperanza, a school for troubled boys; and as a manager of the Mossman-Gladden furniture store. He returned to service with the federal government in 1969 when he began working for the Veterans Administration. Prior to his retirement from the VA, the administrators of Veterans Affairs honored him for his work with paralyzed veterans in designing and building"specially adapted housing". This was one of his most cherished honors. A Memorial Service for Mr. Groman will be held Monday, July 29, 2002, at 1:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Family members will greet and visit with friends immediately after the service. A private burial service will be held at a later date at Santa Fe National Cemetery, where Mr. Groman will be buried next to his wife, Letris. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland 20892. Go to http://cancer.gov/about_nci, for further information.
