Ratchner -- Jeanne Suzanne Ratchner, 57, an Anchorage, AK resident, died August 31, 2002, with her family by her side, after an eight year battle with breast cancer. A Memorial Service was held Saturday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Anchorage. Her ashes will be scattered over the Colorado Rocky Mountains near Durango. Mrs. Ratchner was born on Feburary 18,1945 in Phoenix, AZ to Ernest and Florence DeValk. Her family later moved to Albuquerque, NM. In high school she helped conduct cancer research with skin graphs. She graduated from the University of New Mexico with a BA in Education. In 1967 she married her high school sweetheart, Craig Ratchner. She was involved in many activities with her daughters. Jeanne especially enjoyed spending time at their cabin, which they built, in the Zuni mountains. In 1990 Jeanne's family moved to Anchorage. She worked for the Department of Natural Resources. In 1994 Jeanne was diagnosed with breast cancer. The next eight years she focused on healing herself through traditional and natural means. She conducted extensive research and was in the process of writing a book on Naturopathic healing and breast cancer prevention. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed working outdoors in her yard, caring for her various gardens. Jeanne especially enjoyed traveling with Craig. Jeanne is survived by her husband of 35 years, Craig Ratchner; her three daughters, Suzanne Ratchner of Albuquerque, NM, Denice Frost and husband, Scott of Anchorage, and Amy Barnes and husband, Bill of Sanford, NC; her father, Ernest DeValk; sister, Judy Barnette; and brother-in-law, Darrell Ratchner all of Albuquerque; and many other family members. She will be greatly missed by her Dalmatians, Missy and Tegan. She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence DeValk.
