Rominger -- Morris I. Rominger, 82, passed away Monday September 23, 2002 in Silver City Care Center. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Bright Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2002 at Bright Funeral Home with Mr. Lennial Rambo officiating."Flick" as he was known to his many friends was born July 10, 1920 in Indianapolis, IN. He was the son of Morris Simeon Rominger and Carrie Edith Fisher Rominger. He married Doris Jeannette Hiatt May 15, 1943 in Knoxville, TN. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris of Silver City; two sons, Lanny Rominger and his wife, Susan of Albuquerque; David Rominger and his wife, Loisann of Deming; four granddaughters, Jennifer Rominger, Jamie Rominger, Kelly Rominger and Kacy Rominger all of Albuquerque; two grandsons, Burton Rominger with the Marine Crops in Okinawa and Jon Rominger with the Special Forces in Ft. Benning, GA. After graduating from high school, he was recruited to New Mexico along with several other"Hoosiers" by coach Ken Gunning to play basketball for what was then known as New Mexico Teachers College. Over the next four years the Mustangs became a powerhouse in the old New Mexico conference that included such schools as U.N.M and U.T.E.P. The team won two conference championships and twice participated in the national Championship Tournament in Kansas City. They also registered a long remembered and much celebrated win against U.C.L.A. in the 1940 Western Regional Tournament and were ranked 11th in the final Associated Press Poll that year. His education was interrupted by World War II. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 and served as an officer and bombardier aboard a B-24"Liberator" bomber in the Pacific Theater. After discharge from active duty he finished his Bachelor's Degree at New Mexico Teachers and returned to Indiana where he enrolled in Indiana University in Bloomington where he earned his Master's Degree as a member of I. U.'s first ever class of Physical Science. After a brief coaching stint in Indiana he returned to New Mexico where he taught and coached basketball, football, baseball and tennis during the thirty-six years prior to his retirement. He worked in the Cliff, Cobre, Tularosa, Gadsden and Silver Consolidated School Districts during his career. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Gilbert Arizaga; Bobby Benavidez; Gene Boaz; Lennial Rambo; Mike Trujillo and Dean Bearup. In lieu of flowers, it was his wish and that of the family that any remembrances be directed to the Grant County Humane Association, P.O. Box 1972 Silver City, NM 88062 or to the Athletic Scholarship Fund at Western New Mexico University, P.O.Box 680, Silver City, NM 88062. Bright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
