Asbill -- Smith"Smitty" L. Asbill, Jr., M.D., 70, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico and formally a longtime resident of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on October 6, 2002 with his adoring family by his side. He was born October 10, 1931 in Tipton, Oklahoma and moved with his family to Morse, Texas where he graduated high school in 1949. He then enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country for four years in the Korean War. He was a medic for the Navy and Marines and was awarded a medal for his bravery. After being discharged from the Navy, he attended Texas Tech University and graduated with a degree in chemistry. Following graduation, he attended University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and received his medical degree in 1961. He interned at Methodist Hospital in Dallas and completed his residency in anesthesiology at Parkland Hospital in 1964. He then moved his family to Lubbock, Texas where he practiced at Methodist Hospital for 30 years as a member of Lubbock Anesthesia Associates. During his career he sat on the board of directors and served as District Director of TSA, was a delegate to ASA, a member of Lubbock/Garza County Medical Society, and a member of Phi Rho Medical fraternity. After retirement in 1994, he moved to Albuquerque followed by an adventurous move to Fairbanks, Alaska for four years and Hilo, Hawaii for one year before returning to Albuquerque this past June. Even though he loved practicing medicine and traveling, his most cherished love was his wife, Marjorie, his children and grandchildren. Among all his achievements throughout his wonderful life taking care of and loving his family gave him his greatest pride and joy. He is predeceased by his parents, Smith Langford Asbill, Sr. and Lois Asbill. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marjorie Asbill of Albuquerque; his five children, daughter, Lisa Morgan of Aspen, Colorado, daughter, Leslie Prichard and husband, Troy of Albuquerque, son, Robert Asbill and wife, Julie of Bella Vista, Arkansas, daughter, Lea Anne Oliver and husband, Todd of Waco, Texas, daughter, Laurel Kressler and husband, Rob of Albuquerque. He is also survived by his brother, Jimmie Asbill and wife, Marilyn of Mississippi; and 12 grandchildren, Ben, Greg, Briaun, Brishel, Jake, Brooke, Alex, Morgan, Ashlea, Christopher, Cody and Austin. Services will be held Thursday, October 10, 2002 p.m. in the chapel at Resthaven Funeral Home in Lubbock, Texas. Pallbearers will be Troy Prichard, Todd Oliver, Rob Kressler, Benjamin Furstenwerth, Jimmie Asbill, Dr. Billy P. Kincaid, Dr. James R. Moyes, and Dr. George Beck. The family will receive friends at Resthaven Funeral Home in Lubbock, Texas on Wednesday evening, October 9, 2002 between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
